Munich Kouros
The large, grave statue of a youth from Attica known as the ''Munich Kouros'' is located in the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany, under inventory number 169. The Kouros was acquired by the Glyptothek in 1910. History The Munich kouros is one of the earliest examples of the Ptoon 12 group, and therefore dates to around a decade before the creation of the Siphnian Treasury frieze in 525 BC. It originally stood in Athens, but was taken down and buried relatively soon after – perhaps in 480 BC by the Persian army during the destruction of Athens. After its rediscovery, it was acquired in 1910 by the Munich Glyptothek. Description The Munich kouros is made of Parian marble, and is 2.08 metres high (2.11 m including the plinth). Glyptothek
The Glyptothek () is a museum in Munich, Germany, which was commissioned by the Bavarian King Ludwig I of Bavaria, Ludwig I to house his collection of Ancient Greek art, Greek and Roman art, Roman sculptures (hence γλυπτο- ''glypto-'' "sculpture", from the Greek verb γλύφειν ''glyphein'' "to carve" and the noun θήκη "container"). It was designed by Leo von Klenze in the neoclassical architecture, neoclassical style, and built from 1816 to 1830. Today the museum is a part of the Kunstareal. kouros ( grc, κοῦρος, , plural kouroi) is the modern term given to free-standing Ancient Greek sculptures that depict nude male youths. They first appear in the Archaic period in Greece and are prominent in Attica and Boeotia, with a less frequent presence in many other Ancient Greek territories such as Sicily. Siphnian Treasury
The Siphnian Treasury was a building at the Ancient Greek cult centre of Delphi, erected to host the offerings of the polis, or city-state, of Siphnos. It was one of a number of treasuries lining the "Sacred Way", the processional route through the Sanctuary of Apollo, erected to win the favor of the gods and increase the prestige of the donor polis. It was one of the earlier surviving buildings of this type, and its date remains a matter for debate, with the most plausible date being around 525 BC. Until recently it was often confused or conflated with the neighbouring Cnidian Treasury, a similar but less elaborate building, as the remains of the two had become mixed together and earlier theoretical reconstructions used parts of both. Parian Marble
Parian marble is a fine-grained semi translucent pure-white and entirely flawless marble quarried during the classical era on the Greek island of Paros in the Aegean Sea. It was highly prized by ancient Greeks for making sculptures. Some of the greatest masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture were carved from Parian marble, including the ''Medici Venus'', the ''Venus de Milo'', and the ''Winged Victory of Samothrace''. The original quarries, which were used from the 6th century BC onwards, can still be seen on the north side of the island on the slopes of its central peak. Kroisos Kouros
The Kroisos Kouros ( grc, κοῦρος) is a marble kouros from Anavyssos (Ανάβυσσος) in Attica which functioned as a grave marker for a fallen young warrior named Kroisos (). Overview The free-standing sculpture strides forward with the " archaic smile" playing slightly on his face. The sculpture is dated to the Late Archaic Period c. 540–515 BC and stands 1.95 metres high. It is now situated in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens (inv. no. 3851) in Athens, Greece.
