Robert Franklin Muirhead (22 January 1860 – 16 January 1941), was a Scottish mathematician who discovered Muirhead's inequality. Early life and education Born at Shawlands, Glasgow, in January 1860, Robert Franklyn Muirhead received his early education from private tutors and the village school at Lochwinnoch. After attending the Hamilton Academy and Paisley Grammar school he entered the University of Glasgow, graduating BSc (1879) and MA (1881) gaining highest honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy and the Ferguson Scholarship. Winning the four year George A. Clark Scholarship from Glasgow, Muirhead then continued his studies at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, where in 1886 he won the Smith’s Prize for his essay on Newton's laws of motion, following a year at the University of Göttingen. Robbie Muirhead (born 8 March 1996) is a Scottish professional footballer, who plays as a forward for Greenock Morton. Muirhead began his career with Kilmarnock before joining Dundee United in February 2015. Dame Lorna Elizabeth Muirhead (née Fox) is a past President of the Royal College of Midwives and from 2006 until her retirement in 2017 she served as the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside. Lockhart Muirhead
Lockhart Muirhead (1765–1829) was a Scottish librarian, museum-keeper and academic. He was Regius Professor of Zoology at Glasgow University, from 1807. Life Muirhead travelled in Europe shortly before the French Revolution, and subsequently wrote on both French and Italian topics. He contributed to the ''Monthly Review'' and ''Edinburgh Review''. He was librarian of Glasgow University in the period 1795 to 1823. Muirhead became Keeper of the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow. William Hunter had intended his collection to go to Glasgow, when he died in 1783. It was Muirhead who in 1807 went to London to see to the move of the temporary display, to Glasgow University. John Henry Muirhead (28 April 1855 – 24 May 1940) was a British philosopher best known for having initiated the Muirhead Library of Philosophy in 1890. He became the first person named to the Chair of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham in 1900. Biography Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Muirhead was educated at Gilbertfield House School, the Glasgow Academy (1866–70), and proceeded to Glasgow University, where he was deeply influenced by the Hegelianism of Edward Caird, the Professor of Moral Philosophy. John Muirhead
John Muirhead (July 11, 1877 – 1954) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1922 to 1936. Muirhead was born in Clinton, Ontario and was educated at public schools. He worked as a farmer, and served as a school trustee and municipal assessor. In 1906, Muirhead married Lucy E. Dunfield. He was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1922 provincial election as a candidate of the United Farmers of Manitoba (UFM), defeating Conservative incumbent Reuben Waugh by 137 votes in the Norfolk constituency. The UFM unexpectedly won a majority of seats in this election, and formed government as the Progressive Party. Muirhead served as a backbench supporter of John Bracken's government throughout his time in the legislature. James Patrick Muirhead FRSE (26 July 1813 – 15 October 1898) was a Scottish advocate and author, best known as the biographer of James Watt. Life Born at The Grove, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, he was son of Lockhart Muirhead; George Muirhead was his great-uncle. He was educated first at Glasgow College. Gaining on 3 February 1832 a Snell exhibition at Balliol College, Oxford, he matriculated there on 6 April 1832; spending his long vacations in alpine expeditions, and in the study of German rather than in working for honours, he took a third class in lit. hum. on graduating B.A. in 1835 (M.A. 1838). James Matthew Muirhead (born 30 July 1993) is an Australian cricketer who has played for Victoria and the Perth Scorchers. Early career Muirhead began his professional cricket career playing for the Adelaide Strikers in the inaugural edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) in the 2011/12 summer. He was given a rookie contract to play domestic cricket for his home state of Victoria the following year. James Muirhead (judge)
James Henry Muirhead AC KStJ QC (24 April 1925 – 20 July 1999) was an Administrator of the Northern Territory and a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory. Pre-Northern Territory Muirhead was born in Adelaide and was educated at St Peter's College and the University of Adelaide. After completing high school he enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Forces for service in the Second World War. From 1943 - 1946 he served as an infantryman and signaller with the 57/60 Battalion in Bougainville and later with the 37/52 Battalion in Rabaul, New Britain. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide and was admitted to the South Australian Bar in 1950. He practised as a barrister and solicitor in the firm of Thomson & Co until 1970 when he was appointed as a Judge of the Local and District Criminal Court of South Australia.
