Mthuthuzeli Tom
Mthuthuzeli Tom (7 September 1959 – 27 August 2010) was a South African trade union leader. Born in Mpongo, near East London, Eastern Cape, Tom's family were forcibly relocated to Mdantsane when he was seven years old. He attended Khulani Commercial High School until 1980, then began working as a welder for Mercedes Benz. He joined the South African Automobile Workers' Union, and was soon elected as a shop steward. He also became active in the East London Youth Congress, and through it, the United Democratic Front. In 1983, Tom transferred to the National Automobile and Allied Workers' Union, on whose behalf he was involved in the negotiations which formed the Congress of South African Trade Unions, in 1985. East London, Eastern Cape
East London ( xh, eMonti; af, Oos-Londen) is a city on the southeast coast of South Africa in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality of the Eastern Cape province. Mdantsane
Mdantsane is a South African urban township situated 15 km away from East London, Eastern Cape, East London and 37 km away from King William's Town, Qonce in the Eastern Cape. It is the second largest township in the Eastern Cape after Ibhayi near Port Elizabeth and seventeenth largest in South Africa after Vosloorus near Boksburg, Gauteng. The name Mdantsane was derived from a stream that ran from the Nahoon River down to the Buffalo River. Some believe the stream was called Dontsane. The United Democratic Front (UDF) was a South African popular front that existed from 1983 to 1991. The UDF comprised more than 400 public organizations including trade unions, students' unions, women's and parachurch organizations. The UDF's goal was to establish a "non-racial, united South Africa in which segregation is abolished and in which society is freed from institutional and systematic racism." National Automobile And Allied Workers' Union
The National Automobile and Allied Workers' Union (NAAWU) was a trade union representing workers in the motor industry in South Africa. NAAWU was founded in 1980, with the merger of the National Union of Motor Assembly and Rubber Workers of South Africa (NUMARW), the United Union of Automobile, Rubber and Allied Workers of South Africa, and the Western Province Motor Assembly Workers' Union. The union brought together about 12,000 members and, like all its predecessors, NAAWU affiliated to the Federation of South African Trade Unions (FOSATU). It was led by general secretary Fred Sauls. While its predecessors had been divided on colour lines, NAAWU was open to all workers in the industry.
