The Mrs. Lydia Johnson House is a historic residence located in Maquoketa, Iowa, United States. This house is a fine example of Queen Anne style architecture in the United States. It was built during the economic boom years in the city's development. with Built in 1895, the two and one half storey house features a complex irregular composition, a corner tower, wrap-around porch, a small porch on the second floor above the main porch, various window shapes and sizes, and textured wall surfaces on the exterior. Little is known about the Johnson family who built it, but its notability is derived from the architecture. Maquoketa, Iowa
Maquoketa () is a city in Jackson County, Iowa, United States. Located on the Maquoketa River, it is the county seat of Jackson County. U.S. Route 61 adjoins the city, which therefore hosts traffic between Dubuque and the Quad Cities. Iowa Highways 62 and 64 also pass through the city. Maquoketa Caves State Park is located a few miles northwest of Maquoketa. The population was 6,128 at the time of the 2020 census. History Maquoketa was originally called Springfield, and under the latter name was laid out in 1838. The present name, after the Maquoketa River, was adopted in 1844. The river's name derives from ''Maquaw-Autaw'', which means "Bear River" in Meskwaki. The Davenport and St. Paul Railroad was extended to Maquoketa in 1870 prompting growth. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
