Moïse Polydore Millaud
Moses Polydore Millaud, Moïse Polydore Millaud, (27 August 1813 – 13 October 1871) was a journalist, banker and entrepreneur who founded '' Le Petit Journal'', at one time the leading newspaper in France. Family life Millaud was born in Bordeaux, to Felicity (née Bellon) and Jassuda Millaud 1 (born 1769, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue – died 1865, Paris), Jewish merchants originally from the Papal States who originally sold horses. Self-taught, he became a clerk to a bailiff and in 1833 founded his first newspaper in Bordeaux, ''Le Lutin''. Moses wrote articles under the pseudonym ''Duallim'' an anagram of Millaud. His son was the journalist, writer and playwright Albert Millaud. His daughter Blanche was the wife of George Silva, the editor of the ''Journal des Voyageurs''. Clairville (Louis-François Nicolaïe)
Louis-François-Marie Nicolaïe (28 January 1811 – 8 February 1879), better known as Clairville, was a 19th-century French comedian, poet, chansonnier, goguettier and playwright. Biography Son of the Lyonese playwright and stage manager Alexandre-Henri Nicolaïe dit Clairville (died 1832), he began in 1821 in Paris at the Luxembourg Theater as actor with Madame Saqui, then as stage manager and finally, from 1837, exclusively as playwright. He later joined the Théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique, playing small roles and developed his craft as a playwright, finding that to be his true vocation. He first conceived a revue titled ''1836 dans la lune'', the success of which would launch his career. His plays included comedies, serious plays, revues, féeries, satires and parodies. ''La Presse'' was the first penny press newspaper in France. Peter Brooks, ''Reading for the Plot: Design and Intention in Narrative'', Harvard University Press, 1992, page 146 Overview ''La Presse'' was founded on 16 June 1836 by Émile de Girardin as a popular conservative enterprise. While contemporary newspapers depended heavily on subscription and tight party affiliation, ''La Presse'' was sold by street vendors. Girardin wanted the paper to support the government, without being so tied to specific cabinets that it would limit the newspaper's readership. The initial subscription to ''La Presse'' was only 40 francs a year while other newspapers charged around 80 francs.
