Mount Zion is a village in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,019 at the 2020 census. Geography Mount Zion is located in southeastern Macon County at (39.777967, -88.878614). It is bordered to the northwest by the city of Decatur, the county seat, and to the north by the village of Long Creek. Illinois Route 121 passes through the village, leading northwest to the center of Decatur and southeast to Sullivan. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the village of Mount Zion has a total area of , of which , or 0.07%, are water. Spitler Woods State Natural Area
Spitler Woods State Natural Area is a state park located adjacent to Mount Zion, Illinois. The state park is located within the Decatur, Illinois metropolitan area. The eastern two-thirds of the state park is a listed state natural area noted for its old-growth forest grove of white oak and hickory. The park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Spitler Woods contains two trails totaling in length. Hikers can investigate the loessy soil forming the banks of ''Squirrel Creek'', one of the tiny tributaries that eventually come together to form Lake Decatur and the Sangamon River. The woods are filled with squirrels, who eat the acorns and other mast shed by the old-growth hardwoods. Although deer live in the natural area, hunting is forbidden. Mount Zion High School is a public high school located in Mount Zion, Illinois. The school serves students in grades 9 through 12 and is the only high school operated by Mount Zion Community Unit School District #3. History In 1912, the school's enrollment was about 100 students. Athletics Mount Zion athletic teams are nicknamed the Braves and compete in the Apollo Conference. Sullivan is a city in Moultrie County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,413 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Moultrie County. Sullivan is named after Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, where Fort Moultrie is located. History Sullivan was founded in 1845 as Asa's Point. Two years after Sullivan was founded, the first official courthouse of the county was built. Long Creek, Illinois
Long Creek is a village in Macon County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2020 census its 1,261. It is included in the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Long Creek is named for the creek that runs through the area. The first settlers arrived in 1828 from North Carolina and subsequently built log cabins and made improvements on the surrounding land. In the fall of 1828, a band of Native Americans from the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma arrived and set up camp along Long Creek and began trapping, hunting, and fishing. When they were relatively unsuccessful at catching game, the Kickapoo began killing hogs and stealing poultry from the early settlers. Eventually a group of settlers drove them from the county. During the early 1830s the area saw more settlers arriving, and the first schoolhouse was constructed in 1834. The school also served as a place of worship before the first church was built in 1842.
