Mount Victoria (Bow Range)
__NOTOC__ Mount Victoria, , is a mountain on the border between British Columbia and Alberta in the Canadian Rockies. It is located just northeast of Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park and is also part of Banff National Park and is on the Continental Divide (which is the definition of the interprovincial boundary in this region). The mountain has two peaks, the south being the highest while the north peak is slightly lower at . The mountain is located on the western buttress of Abbot Pass while Mount Lefroy lies on the eastern side. The mountain was named by J. Norman Collie in 1897 for Queen Victoria. The first successful ascent was made in 1897 by J. Norman Collie, Arthur Michael, Charles Fay, and Peter Sarbach. Geology Mount Victoria is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Cambrian period. Fairview Mountain (Alberta)
Fairview Mountain (sometimes called Mount Fairview) is a mountain in Banff National Park situated along the southeastern shoreline of Lake Louise. The mountain was named in 1894 by Walter Wilcox, which reflects the view from the top. An alternate name for the peak is ''Goat Mountain'' although it is rarely referred to as such. While imposing cliffs seen from Lake Louise may indicate a difficult climb, the mountain is easily ascended by experienced hikers via a trail around the backside on the southern slopes of the mountain. Geology Fairview Mountain is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Cambrian period. Mount Lefroy
Mount Lefroy is a mountain on the Continental Divide, at the border of Alberta and British Columbia in western Canada. The mountain is located on the eastern side of Abbot Pass which separates Lake Louise in Banff National Park from Lake O'Hara in Yoho National Park. Mount Victoria lies immediately on the western side of the pass. The mountain was named by George M. Dawson in 1894 for Sir John Henry Lefroy (1817–1890), an astronomer who had traveled over in Canada's north between 1842 and 1844 making meteorological and magnetic observations. The mountain is the site of the first fatal climbing accident in Canada. In 1896 during a failed summit bid, Philip Stanley Abbot slipped on rocks after just coming off an icy section and plummeted down the rock face to his death. Laramide Orogeny
The Laramide orogeny was a time period of mountain building in western North America, which started in the Late Cretaceous, 70 to 80 million years ago, and ended 35 to 55 million years ago. The exact duration and ages of beginning and end of the orogeny are in dispute. The Laramide orogeny occurred in a series of pulses, with quiescent phases intervening. The major feature that was created by this orogeny was deep-seated, thick-skinned deformation, with evidence of this orogeny found from Canada to northern Mexico, with the easternmost extent of the mountain-building represented by the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Cambrian Period ( ; sometimes symbolized C with bar, Ꞓ) was the first geological period of the Paleozoic Era, and of the Phanerozoic Eon. Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at Earth's surface, followed by cementation. Peter Sarbach
Peter Sarbach (1844 – 1930) was born in St. Niklaus, Switzerland, near the village of Zermatt; which is a historic village in the Shadow of the Matterhorn, the great mountain which divides the watershed from Switzerland and Italy. Prominence In 1864, Peter Sarbach was a porter for Sir Edward Whymper in one of his attempts to ascend the Matterhorn. Subsequently, he became a guide in the Swiss Alps and surrounding area. The competent guiding skills of Peter Sarbach were well renowned. At age 53, he was invited to Canada for an 1897 first ascent expedition of Mt.
