Mount Sterling, Missouri
Mount Sterling is an unincorporated community in western Gasconade County, Missouri, United States. Location Mount Sterling is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and Missouri Route A. The Gasconade River flows past the west side of the town. The Gasconade- Osage county line is approximately one mile west of the community. The county seat of Hermann is 18 miles to the northeast. History A part of the Louisiana Purchase, Mount Sterling was first settled by American pioneers in the 1820s. Gasconade County, Missouri
Gasconade County is a county located in the east-central portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,794. The county seat has been Hermann since 1842. The county was named after the Gasconade River. The county is located on the south side of the Missouri River, which once served as the chief route of transportation in the state. It is located in the area known as the Missouri Rhineland. Because of its distinctive conditions, the Hermann area was designated an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983. Hermann, Missouri
Hermann is a city in and the county seat of Gasconade County, Missouri, United States. It has been the county seat since 1842. It is near the center of the Missouri Rhineland and south of the Missouri River. The population was 2,185 at the 2020 census. The city is the commercial center of the Hermann American Viticultural Area, whose seven wineries produce about one-third of the state's wine. Designated in 1983, it is one of the first federally recognized American Viticultural Areas. The designation recognized the renaissance of an area of vineyards and wineries established by German immigrants during the mid-19th century. Shut down by Prohibition, it began to revive in the 1960s. Hermann holds a '' Maifest'' during the third weekend in May and an ''Oktoberfest'' the first four weekends in October. Bartonville, Missouri
Bartonville, MO, was the second town named as the county seat of Gasconade County, in 1825. It was abandoned to the Gasconade River after severe flooding. Its location in Township 43, Range 7 West was not identified again until 1998, when a researcher found a notice of sheriff's sale which included a legal description of the "Bartonville tract". Bartonville, a lost town, was situated in what is now Osage County, across the Gasconade River from Cooper Hill. Bartonville was the county seat until 1828, when like its predecessor Gasconade, it was flooded. The county seat was then moved to the higher town of Mount Sterling. In 1842 residents voted to move it again, to Hermann.
