Mort Street, Canberra
Mort Street is a road in City Centre, Australian Capital Territory, Civic, the city centre of Canberra, Australia. It passes through the city centre's main bus interchange, and continues into the commercial precinct in the suburb of Braddon, Australian Capital Territory, Braddon. Several Government of Australia, Commonwealth Government agency offices are located on the street, including the Australian Crime Commission, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The southern end of Mort Street is closed to most motor traffic and forms part of the City Interchange. The northern Braddon, Australian Capital Territory, Braddon section is home to the popular Knightsbridge Penthouse cocktail bar, Cornocopia Bakery, art supply stores, a yoga studio, and a couple of hairdressing salons. Civic is the city centre or central business district of Canberra. "Civic" is a common name for the district, but it is also called Civic Centre, City Centre, Canberra City and Canberra, and its official division name is ''City''. Canberra's City was established in 1927, although the division name City was not gazetted until 20 September 1928. Walter Burley Griffin's design for Canberra included a "Civic Centre" with a separate "Market Centre" located at what is now Russell, Australian Capital Territory, Russell. Braddon is an inner north suburb of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia located adjacent to the Canberra CBD. The suburb is one of the oldest suburbs in Canberra, a relatively young city, settled in 1922 and gazetted as a division name in September 1928. It contained Canberra's first light-industrial area.
