Morrow Aircraft Corporation
Morrow Aircraft Corporation was American aircraft and aerospace manufacturing company in San Bernardino, California. It developed a process to build airplanes out of plastic impregnated wood. History Plans for a $65,000 plant at the yet-completed Municipal Airport, San Bernardino were announced in October 1940. By the dedication of the airport in December, construction had started on the facility. The plant was somewhat unique in that it was completely air conditioned. After originally facing a shortage of engineers, the company tripled its staff and moved to the new location in May 1941. The company received a certificate authorizing expansion a few weeks later. The was forced to sell its plant to the War Department in February 1942 for $64,000. The following month, the company began removing its equipment to Rialto and the Tri-City Airport. Edgar Schmued
Edgar O. "Ed" Schmued (Schmüd), German-American aircraft designer (1899–1985) was famed for his design of the iconic North American P-51 Mustang and, later, the F-86 Sabre while at North American Aviation. He later worked on other aircraft designs as an aviation consultant. Early life Edgar Schmued was born in Hornbach, Germany, 30 December 1899. At the age of eight, he first saw an airplane in flight and decided that aviation was to be his life's work. Edgar embarked early on a rigorous program of self-study to become an engineer, and later served an apprenticeship in a small engine factory. Norton Air Force Base (1942–1994) was a United States Air Force facility east of downtown San Bernardino in San Bernardino County, California. Morrow 1-L
The Morrow 1-L was a prototype tandem-seat trainer produced by the Morrow Aircraft Corporation. It employed plastic impregnated wood in its construction. Design and development Morrow Aircraft factory designed and built the Model 1-L tandem two-seat trainer for Civilian Pilot Training Program. Morrow Aircraft used a plastic bonded plywood construction for the body and was powered by a Lycoming O-435 engine. The Model 1-L was also called the Victory Trainer. The factory was at the Municipal Airport, San Bernardino, now Norton Air Force Base. Designed by Edgar Schmued who also worked on the North American P-51 Mustang. The Victory Trainer prototype was built, but not used for the World War II effort.
