Morris C. Troper
Morris Carlton Troper (November 18, 1892 – November 17, 1962) was a Jewish-American accountant from New York credited for saving hundreds of Jewish refugees during World War II. Life Troper was born on November 18, 1892, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Abraham Troper and Rose Schaeffer. Troper attended the College of the City of New York, graduating from there with an A.B. in 1914. He then went to New York University, graduating from there with a B.C.S. 1917, an M.C.L. in 1918, and a J.D. in 1925. He taught in New York City public schools from 1914 to 1918, and in 1920 he was an accountancy instructor at the College of the City of New York. In 1919, he became a member of the certified public accountants firm Loeb and Troper. He was admitted to the bar in 1925. Paul Baerwald (September 27, 1871 – July 2, 1961) was a German-born Jewish-American banker and philanthropist. Early life and family Baerwald was born on September 27, 1871 in Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, the son of Dr. Herman Baerwald and Selma Frenkel. Career Baerwald began working in the banking business with Lazard-Speyer-Ellissen in Frankfurt from 1886 to 1891. He then worked for Speyer Brothers in London from 1891 to 1896. From 1896 to 1906, he worked with Speyer and Company in New York City. He then worked as a partner in Lazard Frères until 1930, when he retired from banking to focus on entirely on philanthropic and communal endeavors. Central Synagogue (Congregation Ahawath Chesed Shaar Hashomayim; yi, צענטראַל-סינאַגאָגע) is a notable Reform synagogue located at 652 Lexington Avenue, at the corner of East 55th Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. It was built in 1870–1872 and was designed by Henry Fernbach in the Moorish Revival style as a copy of Budapest's Dohány Street Synagogue. It has been in continuous use by a congregation longer than any other in the state of New York, except Congregation Berith Sholom in Troy, New York, and is among the oldest existing synagogue buildings in the United States.
