Having been cancelled in 1988, it returned to the schedule in 1992 and was held annually until 2001. This was the second European Tour event in North Africa after the Tunisian Open, but the tour eventually left North Africa to focus its global expansion on the established golf markets of South Africa and Australasia and the major growth region of Asia. There were several different host courses for the Moroccan Open. In 2001, the prize fund was €651,337, which was one of the smallest on the tour that year. Rabat
Rabat (, also , ; ar, الرِّبَاط, er-Ribât; ber, ⵕⵕⴱⴰⵟ, ṛṛbaṭ) is the capital city of Morocco and the country's seventh largest city with an urban population of approximately 580,000 (2014) and a metropolitan population of over 1.2 million. 1998 European Tour
The 1998 European Tour was the 27th official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The season was made up of 33 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and several non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by Scotland's Colin Montgomerie for the sixth year in succession. Changes for 1998 For the first time the schedule included the Masters Tournament, U.S. Open and PGA Championship, although winnings did not count towards the Order of Merit. There were several changes from the previous season with the addition of the Qatar Masters, the return of the Belgian Open, and the loss of the Dimension Data Pro-Am. David Gilford
David Gilford (born 14 September 1965) is an English professional golfer. Gilford was born in Crewe. In 1981, aged just 15, he won the Carris Trophy, English Boys Under-18 Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, at Moor Park. He won the English Amateur in 1984 and turned professional in 1986. Gilford has six wins on the European Tour, all of which came between 1991 and 1994. He finished in the top ten of the European Tour Order of Merit twice, placing 9th in 1991 and 7th in 1994. He played in the Ryder Cup in 1991 and 1995. After reaching 50, Gilford played on the European Senior Tour, playing his first event in late 2015. Mark James (golfer)
Mark Hugh James (born 28 October 1953) is an English professional golfer who had a long career on the European Tour and captained Europe in the 1999 Ryder Cup. He has also played senior golf on the European Senior Tour and the U.S.-based Champions Tour. Early life and amateur career James was born in Manchester, England and educated at Stamford School. He won the English Amateur championship at Woodhall Spa in 1974 and was a member of the Great Britain & Ireland 1975 Walker Cup team. The 1995 season marked the start of co-sanctioning arrangements with other tours, with the addition of the Southern Africa Tour's South African PGA Championship to the European Tour schedule. Eduardo Alejandro Romero (17 July 1954 – 13 February 2022) was an Argentine professional golfer. Nicknamed "El Gato" ("The Cat"), he won over 80 professional tournaments around the world, including eight on the European Tour and five on the Champions Tour, with two senior majors; he also won over 50 times in South America and was a member of the Argentine team at the World Cup on 14 occasions. Peter Hedblom
Peter Mikael Hedblom (born 20 January 1970) is a Swedish professional golfer. Early years Hedblom was born in Gävle, Sweden. When he was just a few years old, he followed his father Olle, a former bandy player, who later became a golf club professional, to the golf course at Gävle Golf Club. Wayne Riley
Wayne Riley (born 17 September 1962) is an Australian professional golfer. Career Riley was born in Sydney. He turned professional in 1977, and started out on the PGA Tour of Australasia. He has won several tournaments in Australia and New Zealand, including the 1991 Australian Open. Riley came through the European Tour's final qualifying school in 1984, but had to wait eleven years before winning his first tournament on the tour, the 1995 Scottish Open. He played on the European Tour for almost twenty years, and won only one other tour event, the 1996 Portuguese Open. He finished a career high 11th on the Order of Merit in 1995. Riley represented Australia in the 1996 Alfred Dunhill Cup and the 1997 World Cup. Since leaving the tour, Riley has worked for Sky Sports as an on course commentator on their European Tour coverage. Darren Cole (born 3 January 1992) is a Scottish footballer who plays as a defender for Coleraine. Roger Chapman (golfer)
Roger Michael Chapman (born 1 May 1959) is an English professional golfer who played on the European Tour and later on the PGA Tour Champions. He now plays on the European Senior Tour. He won two senior majors in 2012, the Senior PGA Championship and the U.S. Senior Open. Amateur career Chapman was born in Nakuru, Kenya, where his father worked for the Ministry of Agriculture. After a spell living in Trinidad, the family returned to England when Chapman was about five years old. His biggest individual successes as an amateur were winning the 1979 English Amateur and the 1981 Lytham Trophy. He represented Great Britain & Ireland in the 1981 Walker Cup where, although the United States won the match 15–9, Chapman won three of his four matches. Clinton Whitelaw
Clinton John Whitelaw (born 24 December 1970) is a South African professional golfer. Early life Whitelaw was born in Johannesburg. Professional career In 1990, he turned professional. Whitelaw has competed predominantly on the Southern Africa-based Sunshine Tour since then, where he has won three tournaments, including the 1993 Philips South African Open. He also played on the Canadian Tour during his early career. Whitelaw played on the European Tour the late 1990s, having won his card at the qualifying school at the end of 1996. He won the 1997 Moroccan Open, and went on to finish 54th on the Order of Merit that season. However he was unable to repeat that performance in the following seasons due to a recurring lumbar spine injury.
