Mormon Springs, Mississippi
Mormon Springs is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Mississippi. Mormon Springs is located southwest of Gattman. History Mormon Springs is named for the nearby spring used to baptize local converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). On April 8, 1846, 43 people, led by John Brown, left Mormon Springs with the planned destination of the Salt Lake Valley. Among the settlers was John Holladay and Hark Wales, one of the earliest African-American members of the LDS church. The settlers became known as the "Mississippi Saints", and established one of the first settlements outside of Salt Lake City. This community became what is today Holladay, Utah. Holladay is a city in central Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area and abuts the Wasatch National Forest. John Holladay
John Holladay (March 10, 1798 – December 31, 1861) was an early settler and namesake of the settlement of Holladay's Burg, Utah Territory, which became Holladay, Utah. He and his family were early LDS pioneers in Colorado, Utah, and California. Family John Holladay was born in Camden District, Kershaw County, South Carolina. Some Utah descendants erroneously insist on calling him "John Daniel", though no credible evidence supports this. Historical records agree his given name was only "John". Holladay married Catherine Beasley Higgins, also Camden born, in South Carolina in 1822. They had 10 children, nine of whom survived early childhood. John Brown (Mormon Pioneer)
John Brown (1820–1896 ) was a leader among the Mormons in the southern United States and in the pioneer exodus to the West. He was also a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature. Brown was born in Sumner County, Tennessee. He was baptized as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Perry County, Illinois, by George P. Dykes. Brown later served as a Mormon missionary in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Liverpool, England. He headed a group of Latter-day Saints, mainly from Mississippi, who moved west in 1846. They did not realize that the main body of the church had stopped at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and they ended up wintering in Pueblo, Colorado. Brown himself had headed back east to meet with higher up church leaders, and was part of the pioneer company headed by Brigham Young that arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847.
