Morley Borough Independent
The Morley Borough Independents (MBI) are a local political party in Leeds, West Yorkshire, founded in 2004. Their stated aim is to represent the interests of the residents of Morley and the former Municipal Borough of Morley on Leeds City Council, arguing they "are not effected by having to tow the party line laid down in Westminster" by national political parties including the Conservative Party, Labour Party and Liberal Democrats. History Founded in January 2004, prior to the upcoming Leeds City Council election in May, the creation of the Morley Borough Independents formalised an informal grouping of independent council candidates who had stood in the Morley North and Morley South wards since 2002 as well as elected Morley Town Councillors since the Town Council's creation in 2000. Electoral Commission
An election commission is a body charged with overseeing the implementation of electioneering process of any country. 2008 Leeds City Council Election
The 2008 Leeds City Council election took place on Thursday 1 May 2008 to elect members of Leeds City Council in England. As per the election cycle, one third of the council's 99 seats were contested, plus an additional vacancy in Calverley and Farsley ward as Amanda Carter stood down. Those seats up for election were those of the first-placed candidate elected for every ward at the 2004 all-out election, who had been granted a four-year term to expire in 2008. It saw the Liberal Democrat and Conservative coalition administration continue their control of the council. Despite both Labour and the Liberal Democrats winning more seats, the Conservatives won the majority of votes cast for the first time since 1992. 1973 Leeds City Council Election
The first elections to the newly created Leeds City Council were held on 10 May 1973, with the entirety of the 96 seat council – three seats for each of the 32 wards – up for vote. The Local Government Act 1972 stipulated that the elected members were to shadow and eventually take over from the predecessor corporation on 1 April 1974. The order in which the councillors were elected dictated their term serving, with third-place candidates serving two years and up for re-election in 1975, second-placed three years expiring in 1976 and 1st-placed five years until 1978. 1996 Leeds City Council Election
The Leeds City Council elections were held on Thursday, 2 May 1996, with a third of the council up for election. The Conservatives suffered another routing, although with a less impressive Labour vote and a slight recovery in their own vote, were able to hold on to three seats. Labour furthered their stranglehold on the council with an additional seven gains, with all but Burmantofts (Liberal Democrat) and Pudsey South (Independent) from the Tories. As a result of the gains, those two wards - along with the Tory losses of Aireborough, Halton, Morley North and Weetwood wards - were now represented entirely by Labour (a first for most). 1988 Leeds City Council Election
The Leeds City Council election was held on Thursday, 5 May 1988, with one third of the council and a vacancy in Headingley to be elected. Following national patterns, the newly merged Social and Liberal Democrats, seen a substantial fall in vote to their lowest share in a decade, with former candidates standing against them as SDP in opposition to the merger. The SLD collapse was largely uniform, mostly transferring to Labour, except in northern wards - where support tended to disperse between the main parties and any minor candidate standing (usually Green or the aforementioned breakaway SDP) - or wards in which Independents stood. 1995 Leeds City Council Election
The Leeds City Council elections were held on Thursday, 4 May 1995, with one third of the council up for election, alongside a vacancy in Roundhay. Labour won another victory over the opposition parties, winning a record number of wards as the Labour gains extended further into Conservative heartland. A disastrous result for the Tories saw them fall even further from the record lows they set the year before, losing Cookridge, North and Roundhay for the first time - with Wetherby their sole defence. Labour gained eight in total, securing second councillors in the previously reliable Conservative wards of Aireborough, Halton, Pudsey North and Weetwood. Middleton, Leeds
Middleton is a largely residential suburb of Leeds in West Yorkshire, England and historically a village in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is situated on a hill south of Leeds city centre and north north-west of London. It sits in the Middleton Park ward of Leeds City Council and Leeds Central parliamentary constituency. The population of Middleton Park ward - which includes Belle Isle - was 26,228 at the 2011 Census. Middleton was occupied before the Norman Conquest and recorded in the ''Domesday Book'' of 1086 as ''Mildetone''.
