Morgan City, also known as New Rescue, is an unincorporated community located in Morgan and Marshall counties, Alabama, United States. It is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area, as well as the Decatur Metropolitan Area. It is located atop Brindley Mountain which is approximately halfway between Arab and Huntsville along U.S. 231. Newsome Sinks In this area lies one of the region's densest areas of caves, known as the Newsome Sinks Karst Area. In a span of 50 acres it contains well over 30 documented caves and pits. Morgan City is a small city in St. Mary and lower St. Martin parishes in the U.S. State of Louisiana. The population was 12,404 at the 2010 census. Known for being “right in the middle of everywhere”, Morgan City is located 68 miles (109 km) southeast of Lafayette, 64 miles (103 km) south of Baton Rouge, and 86 miles (138 km) west of New Orleans Morgan City sits on the banks of the Atchafalaya River. The town was originally named "Tiger Island" by surveyors appointed by U.S. Secretary of War John Calhoun, because of a particular type of wild cat seen in the area. It was later changed for a time to "Brashear City," named after Walter Brashear, a prominent Kentucky physician who had purchased large tracts of land and acquired numerous sugar mills in the area. It is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area. Geography Morgan City is located in southern Leflore County at (33.379637, -90.349713). Via Highway 7 it is south of Itta Bena and northeast of Belzoni. Greenwood, the Leflore county seat, is to the northeast of Morgan City. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The town is northwest of the Yazoo River. Leflore County is part of the Mississippi Delta region.
