Moresby is a rural town and locality in the Cassowary Coast Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Moresby had a population of 149 people. Geography The town is north of centre within the locality. It is bounded in the north-east by the Moresby River, in the south-east by its tributary Little Moresby Creek and in the south by its tributary Boobah Creek. The Bruce Highway traverses the locality from south to north, passing through the town. The North Coast railway line traverses the locality from the south-west to the north-west, passing to the west of the town, but there is no railway station within the locality. There are sugarcane tramways in the locality. Most of the land in the locality is flat and low-lying (10 metres about sea level) and is used for crops, principally sugarcane. HMS ''Basilisk'' was a first-class paddle sloop of the Royal Navy, built at the Woolwich Dockyard and launched on 22 August 1848.Bastock, p.57-58. John Moresby
Rear Admiral John Moresby (15 March 1830 – 12 July 1922) was a British naval officer who explored the coast of New Guinea and was the first European to discover the site of Port Moresby. Life and career Moresby was born in Allerford, Somerset, England, the son of Eliza Louisa and Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby. He joined the navy at an early age as a Volunteer 1st Class in HMS ''Victor'', and rose to be in charge of the 1,031 ton paddle steamer cruiser HMS ''Basilisk'' in which he made hydrological surveys around eastern New Guinea. During the survey of the southern coast he discovered the harbour which he named Fairfax after his father. The town established there, based on already existing native villages (principally Hanuabada) was named Port Moresby and is now the nation's capital. George Augustus Frederick Elphinstone Dalrymple (6 May 1826 – 22 January 1876) was a colonist, explorer, public servant and politician, member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. He founded the towns of Bowen and Cardwell, and pioneered the opening up of the Herbert, Burdekin, Johnstone and Daintree River regions to British colonisation. Moresby Range
Moresby Range is a national park in Far North Queensland, Australia, 1,314 km northwest of Brisbane. It is part of the Coastal Wet Tropics Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance for the conservation of lowland tropical rainforest birds. The national park is located on the coast south of the mouth of the Johnstone River a few km from Innisfail in the Cassowary Coast Region. The range reaches elevations of around 160 m above sea level. It belongs to the Wet Tropics biogregion and lies within the Johnstone River water catchment. About 8% of the park is classed as wetlands. The Spectacled flying fox is the only rare or threatened species to have been identified in the park. In 2010, five cassowaries which inhabit the park were tagged with GPS dataloggers with VHF transmitters to enable monitoring of their movement. North Coast Railway Line, Queensland
The North Coast railway line is a 1067 mm railway line in Queensland, Australia. Bruce Highway
The Bruce Highway is a major highway in Queensland, Australia. Commencing in the state capital, Brisbane, it passes through areas close to the eastern coast on its way to Cairns in Far North Queensland. The route is part of the Australian National Highway and also part of Highway 1, the longest highway route in Australia. Its length is approximately ; it is entirely sealed with bitumen.
