The Moonee Valley Racing Club (MVRC) was founded by William Samuel (W.S.) Cox), in 1883 is located at The Valley Racecourse on McPherson Street, Moonee Ponds (a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia). William Samuel Cox
William Samuel (W.S.) Cox (1831–1895) was a pioneer of Thoroughbred racing in Australia. He opened his first venture, Kensington Park Racecourse, in 1874, which operated until 1882. He founded the Moonee Valley Racing Club in 1883, on land he leased the previous year. The Cox Plate, a prestigious Group 1 horse racing event, that has been held annually at the Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne in October since 1922, is named after him. Other members of Cox's family to contribute to Australian racing include his sons A. H. (Archie) Cox, who became club secretary; and W. S. Cox, Jr., a successful amateur jockey and trainer; the latter's son William Stanley Cox; and his son, William Murray Cox. Victoria Racing Club
The Victoria Racing Club was founded in 1864. It was formed following the disbanding of the Victoria Turf Club and the Victoria Jockey Club. A legacy passed from the Victoria Turf Club was the annual "race that stops a nation", the Melbourne Cup, which was first contested in 1861. From its foundation in 1864 until 2001, the Victoria Racing Club was the responsible authority for the conduct of thoroughbred racing in the State of Victoria, Australia. Since 2001, this role has been managed by Racing Victoria Limited. The VRC is managed by an unpaid committee, elected by club members. In 1871, the Victorian Government appointed the VRC as trustees of a site of 352 acres (1.4 km2) of Crown Land, next to the Maribyrnong River, which became known as Flemington Racecourse. The Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) is one of three metropolitan horse racing clubs in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It began life as the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, in 1875 with Mr. E.C. Within six months the VATC were granted use of Crown land at Caulfield as a permanent home in Melbourne. History and race meetings In 1879, the club staged the first running of the Caulfield Cup, and two years later, introduced the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap.
