Moody is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in southwestern Howell County, Missouri, Howell County, Missouri, United States. It is located 16 miles south of West Plains, Missouri, West Plains, just north of Route 142 (Missouri), Route 142 on Route E. Bennetts River flows past the west side of the community. The Missouri-Arkansas state line is approximately 1.5 miles to the south. A post office called Moody has been in operation since 1880. The community has the name of a pioneer citizen who also gave his name to Moody Creek, a small stream just north of the town site. Howell County, Missouri
Howell County is in southern Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 39,750. The largest city and county seat is West Plains. The county was officially organized on March 2, 1851, and is named after Josiah Howell, a pioneer settler in the Howell Valley. Howell County comprises the West Plains, MO, Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Howell County was organized on March 2, 1857, from Oregon County, and is named for Josiah Howell, who made the first settlement in Howell Valley. The first circuit court met in a log cabin one mile east of West Plains, according to an 1876 account. A small, wooden courthouse was built on the square in West Plains in 1859. It was damaged during the Civil War in 1862. The county was reorganized three years later, but all of the county records were destroyed in an 1866 fire. West Plains is a city in, and the county seat of Howell County, Missouri, United States. The population was 12,184 at the 2020 census. History The history of West Plains can be traced back to 1832, when settler Josiah Howell (after whom Howell County is named) created the first settlement in the region known as Howell Valley. West Plains was so named because the settlement was on a prairie in a westerly direction from the nearest town, Thomasville. Bennetts River
Bennetts River is a stream in northern Arkansas and southern Missouri. The stream source is in Howell County, Missouri southeast of Hocomo on US 160. It flows south to the west of Moody, Missouri and crosses under Missouri Route 142. The stream flows south into Fulton County, Arkansas and turns to a westerly direction northwest of Viola. The stream crosses Arkansas Route 87 just south of Vidette and flows into Baxter County, Arkansas, and on into the northeast arm of Norfork Lake (Bennetts Bayou) across from the Gamaliel Campground.
