Montreal East Refinery (Gulf Oil Canada)
The Montreal East Refinery (Gulf Canada) is a small petrochemical refinery located inside the city of Montréal-Est and inside the Coastal Petrochemical fields. The operator of the refining unit is Coastal Petrochemical (Petrochimie Coastal du Canada). History The refinery was constructed by British-American Oil Company in the 1930s to process crude oil imported from Texas. It was shut down by B/A's successor company, Gulf Canada, in 1983. Ultramar Canada purchased the 74,000 b/d capacity facility. refinery from Gulf Canada in 1986 and closed it soon after with the loss of 450 jobs. In June 1986 Montreal-based engineering firm SNC Lavalin, Lavalin Inc. announced it was purchasing the refinery and would re-open it. Montreal East (in French: ''Montréal-Est'') is an on-island suburb in southwestern Quebec, Canada, on the island of Montreal. Montreal-Est has been home to many large oil refineries since 1915. History The formation of Montréal-Est as a municipality was initiated in 1910 by businessman Joseph Versailles, who had bought of land there. The town was incorporated on 4 June 1910 under the name Montreal East, when it separated from Pointe-aux-Trembles and Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rivière-des-Prairies. Versailles was mayor of the town until his death in 1931. Montreal Refinery
The Montreal Refinery is an oil refinery located in the city of Montreal inside the Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough. The refinery is not far from the Montreal East Refinery. This refinery is the largest Suncor Energy refinery. History The Montreal refinery was originally commissioned by Petrofina on September 15, 1955, with a throughput of 20,000 bpd. In the 1970's, expansion work was undertaken to bring capacity to 95,000 bpd. In 1981, the then Crown corporation Petro-Canada acquired the Montreal refinery as part of a government backed $1.6 billion deal to acquire all Petrofina's Canadian assets. The last major expansion of the refinery occurred in 2005 when Petro-Canada made the decision to close a smaller refinery operating in Oakville, Ontario and consolidate the Eastern Canada operations in Montreal. The Montreal East Refinery (french: Raffinerie de Montréal-Est) was an oil refinery located in Montreal East and formerly Shell Canada's largest refinery. In October 2010, refinery operations permanently ceased and the facility was subsequently converted into a storage terminal. History The defunct refinery, the second owned by Shell in Canada, opened on 24 March 1933. It began with three units; the distillation unit, a topping unit, and cracking catalytic unit. Gulf Canada was a Canadian integrated petroleum company that existed between 1944 and 2001. Gulf Oil Corporation began operating in Canada in 1942, and two years later formed a Canadian subsidiary called the Canadian Gulf Oil Company. In 1956 Canadian Gulf Oil merged with the British American Oil Company (of which Gulf Oil was the controlling shareholder) and until 1969 operated under the British American name. In 1969 British American amalgamated with its subsidiaries into a new company called Gulf Oil Canada Limited.
