The Montezuma Community School District is a rural public school district that serves the town of Montezuma, Iowa, and surrounding areas in southern Poweshiek County, including much of Deep River. The school's mascot is the Braves. Their colors are blue and white. History In 1992, the Deep River–Millersburg Community School District (DR-M) closed its secondary school and established a whole grade-sharing program with both the Montezuma Community School District and the English Valleys Community School District. Secondary students from DR-M chose which school district they wished to attend for junior and senior high school. On July 1, 2009, the DR-M was consolidated into the English Valleys Community School District, although a portion of it was split to the Montezuma Community School District. Poweshiek County is a county in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,662. The county seat is Montezuma. The county is named for the chief of the Fox tribe who signed the treaty ending the Black Hawk War. It lies along Interstate 80 between Des Moines and Iowa City. South Iowa Cedar League
The South Iowa Cedar League is a high school athletic conference in south central and southeastern Iowa. The conference is made up of mostly 1A schools, as well as a few 2A schools (the two smallest classes in the state). A 9-team league from the 1960s, the conference expanded to 12 teams in 1996, then dropped to 11 members when Williamsburg joined the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference in 2000. In the fall of 2014, the schools of the SICL voted to allow Colfax–Mingo to join the SICL, making it a 12-team league again. Deep River is a city in Poweshiek County, Iowa, United States. It is also the name of the township which includes the city. The city population was 249 at the time of the 2020 census. Brief history and etymology In 1856 the town of Dresden, approximately one mile east of the present town of Deep River, was platted. The Whitney brothers operated a store there for about 20 years. When the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was built, the residents of Dresden moved to be near the railroad, and thus the town of Deep River was established in 1884.
