Monroe County is a county on the northeast border of the U.S. state of Mississippi next to Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 36,989. Its county seat is Aberdeen. History The county is named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Smithville is a town in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 509 at the 2020 census. Smithville is the birthplace of Rod Brasfield, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. History Smithville is located on lands purchased from Chickasaw chief Che-lah-cha-chubby in 1836. The town is named for William Smith, an early settler who established a store at the site around 1840. Hatley is a town in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 482 at the 2010 census. Geography Hatley is located at east of Amory. According to the United States Geological Survey, a variant name is ''Tubbs Cross Roads''. When Hatley became a town it was on land owned by the Tubb family and named Tubb's Crossroads. Several years later a group of Seventh Day Adventist migrated into the area, took control of town government in subsequent elections and renamed it Hatley in honor of a minister in the church they left when they moved to the Hatley area. Amory is a city in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. Located in the northeastern part of the state near the Alabama border, it was founded in 1887 as a railroad town by the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad.
