Monrepo
Mon Repos or Monrepos (russian: Монрепо́, from the French for "my rest") is an extensive English landscape park in the northern part of the rocky island of Linnasaari (Tverdysh, Slottsholmen) outside Vyborg, Russia. The park lies along the shoreline of the Zashchitnaya Bay, Zashchitnaya inlet of Vyborg Bay and occupies about of land. The manor of Monrepos was established by Baron Ludwig Heinrich von Nicolay who bought this parcel of land in 1788. The estate was considered a jewel of Old Finland and belonged to his descendants until the Soviet takeover in 1944. The core of the baronial estate consists of the Neoclassical main house (designed by Giuseppe Antonio Martinelli) (today derelict) and the library house. The seaside park is strewn with glacially deposited boulders, scenic cliffs and wooden pavilions. Zashchitnaya Bay
Zashchitnaya Bay (russian: Бухта Защитная, fi, Suomenvedenpohja) is the northernmost part of Vyborg Bay. It is located adjacent to the city of Vyborg ( fi, Viipuri), Leningrad Oblast, Russia. Vyborg Bay is part of the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The Castle of Vyborg and the Monrepos Park face Zashchitnaya Bay. The old Saimaa Canal (opened in 1856), as well as the new one, connect Zashchitnaya Bay with Lake Saimaa in Finland. In the Middle Ages, the river Vuoksa had an outlet in Suomenvedenpohja, which however dried up little by little due to post-glacial rebound and was left completely dry in 1857 when the Kiviniemi rapids in Losevo (russian: Лосево, fi, Kiviniemi) were formed and the Burnaya River (, ) became the main outlet of Vuoksa. Ludwig Heinrich Von Nicolay
Ludwig Heinrich Freiherr von Nicolay (russian: Андре́й Льво́вич Никола́и, translit=Andréj L'vovič Nikolái; 25 December 1737, in Strasbourg, in Monrepos north of Vyborg) was a German poet of the Enlightenment. He served as President of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences between 1798 and 1803. Nicolay was the son of a Strasbourg archivist. He graduated from the University of Strasbourg with a degree in law. Like his father, he served as a librarian to a string of rich nobles. Prince Dmitry Gallitsyn employed Nicolay as his secretary in Vienna and Paris where he came to know Voltaire, Diderot, d'Alembert and other intellectuals of the Enlightenment. In 1769 Nicolay was invited to the Russian Empire to be a teacher of logic for the future Emperor Paul I of Russia. Vyborg Bay (, , ) is a deep inlet running northeastward near the eastern end of Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The city of Vyborg is located near the head of the gulf. The Monrepos Park is considered a jewel of the bay and a major draw for tourists. Since the mid-19th century, the bay has been connected by the Saimaa Canal to the lake Saimaa in Finland.
