Monkseaton is an area of Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, in the North East of England. Historically in Northumberland, it is in the north-east of the borough, from the North Sea coast and north of the River Tyne at North Shields. to the north of Monkseaton, the extensive built-up areas of North Tyneside change abruptly into Green belt (UK), green belt stretching north into south-east Northumberland. Monkseaton High School
Monkseaton High School is a coeducational upper school situated in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, England for 13- to 18-year-olds. There are 465 students on roll, over 150 of whom are in the sixth form. The school has initiated or led a number of local and national initiatives aimed at raising standards and promoting LGBT equality. Monkseaton High School is noted for its innovations in degree study in schools and primary modern languages. West Monkseaton Metro Station
West Monkseaton is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the village of Earsdon and suburb of Monkseaton, North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It joined the network on 11 August 1980, following the opening of the first phase of the network, between Haymarket and Tynemouth via Four Lane Ends. History Monkseaton had been served by a station since 1864. However, the development of new housing in the area adjoining the line led the London and North Eastern Railway to construct an additional station, about west along the line from the station at Monkseaton. The station opened in March 1933, as part of the London and North Eastern Railway, with the station building constructed in Art Deco style. The station's platforms took just a month to build after plans were approved. The reinforced concrete Art Deco station building is attributed to the London and North Eastern Railway architect, H. H. Monkseaton is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the suburb of Monkseaton, North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It joined the network on 11 August 1980, following the opening of the first phase of the network, between Haymarket and Tynemouth via Four Lane Ends. History Monkseaton has been served by a station since June 1864, with the station at the current site opened in July 1915, under the North Eastern Railway. Following closure for conversion in the late 1970s, much of the original North Eastern Railway station building, dating from 1915, was retained. However, the southbound platform (trains towards South Shields) and buildings were demolished and replaced. Monkseaton was recently refurbished, along with Cullercoats and West Monkseaton, in 2018, as part of the ''Metro: All Change'' programme. Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay is a seaside town in the North Tyneside borough in Tyne and Wear, England. It formerly governed as part of Northumberland and has been part of Tyne and Wear since 1974. It is part of the wider Tyneside built-up area, being around east of Newcastle upon Tyne. Monkseaton Shootings
The Monkseaton shootings occurred on 30 April 1989 in Monkseaton, Tyne & Wear, United Kingdom, when Robert Sartin killed one man and left 14 other people injured during a 20-minute shooting spree. Shooting Sartin, a 22-year-old clerk, took his father's double-barrelled shotgun and began shooting at people in nearby gardens, houses, and passing cars. Witnesses described how Sartin fired indiscriminately at people. He then drove his car towards the seafront at Whitley Bay, followed by an unmarked police car, and was arrested by unarmed police officer Danny Herdman. Sartin was charged with the murder of Kenneth Mackintosh in Windsor Road, Monkseaton, and 17 counts of attempted murder. In May 1996, he appeared at Durham Crown Court where he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and he was subsequently detained indefinitely at a secure mental unit. Tyne And Wear Metro
The Tyne and Wear Metro is an overground and underground light rail rapid transit system serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and the City of Sunderland (together forming Tyne and Wear). Tyne And Wear
Tyne and Wear () is a metropolitan county in North East England, situated around the mouths of the rivers Tyne and Wear. It was created in 1974, by the Local Government Act 1972, along with five metropolitan boroughs of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside.
