Monarto, South Australia
Monarto is a locality in South Australia west of the Murray River. It is north of the South Eastern Freeway between the Callington and Murray Bridge exits 63 km from Adelaide. Most of the residents of Monarto run small hobby-like farms, raising cows, sheep and horses. Crops in the area include wheat, oats and barley. In the 1970s Monarto was proposed to be the site of a new satellite city of Adelaide originally known as "New Murray Town". By the turn of the century the proposal had been completely abandoned. History Establishment The locality of Monarto was originally a private subdivision of section 210 of the Hundred of Monarto, from which it took its name, the hundred having been gazetted in 1847. The Hundred was named after an aboriginal woman, "Queen Monarto", who lived in the area at the time of its proclamation. The township was laid out in 1908. Monarto Safari Park
Monarto Safari Park, formerly known as Monarto Zoological Park and Monarto Zoo, is a open-range zoo located in South Australia administered by the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia. It is located at Monarto, approximately from Adelaide's centre. The zoo features several unique attractions, including opportunities to get close to lions and cheetahs, and have interactive experiences with meerkats, a southern white rhinoceros and a black rhinoceros, and see Australia's largest giraffe herd. History The zoo was created in 1983 on land owned by the state government as a closed-to-the-public, purpose breeding area and endangered species sanctuary. In 1990, a study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of allowing public access to the zoo, and by 1993 it had been developed into a large educational facility, open to the public, with bus and walking tours. __NOTOC__ Monarto Conservation Park is a protected area located in the Australian state of South Australia in the suburb of Monarto South about south-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about south-west of the town of Murray Bridge. The conservation park consists of land in sections 495 and 496 in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Monarto. It was proclaimed under the ''National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972'' on 15 September 1983. As of 2016, it covered an area of . The above-described land which was previously known as ''Braendlers Scrub'' was part of the site for the now-abandoned city of Monarto. Hundred Of Monarto
The Hundred of Monarto is a cadastral unit of hundred, the centre of which lies about east southeast of Adelaide in South Australia and about west of the Murray River. One of the ten hundreds of the County of Sturt, it is bounded on the west by the Bremer River, with the north west corner being set at the point where Mount Barker Creek merges with the river. It was named in 1847 by Governor Frederick Robe after "Queen Monarto", an aboriginal woman who lived at the time in the area. According to John Wrathall Bull, in his writings on early South Australia history, she was the ' (partner) of aboriginal tribal leader "King John", whose tribe resided "on the banks of the Murray" at the time. Monarto South is a locality in South Australia west of the Murray River and south east by road from Adelaide. The Monarto South railway station is north of the South Eastern Freeway between the Callington and Murray Bridge exits, but the locality spans south of the freeway to Chaunceys Line Road and Ferries McDonald Conservation Park. In the late 1970s Monarto Junction (or "New Murray Town") was proposed to be the site of a new satellite city of Adelaide. By the turn of the century the proposal had been completely abandoned. Monarto South Railway Station
Monarto South railway station was located on the Adelaide to Wolseley line serving the South Australian town of Monarto South. History The railway station opened on 1 May 1886, following the extension of Adelaide-Wolseley railway line to Bordertown. On 13 October 1919, Monarto South became a junction station with the opening of the Sedan line. It briefly became a break of gauge station in 1995 when the Adelaide to Wolseley line was gauge converted to standard gauge. This ceased when the Sedan line was also converted as far as its then terminus at Apamurra in November 1995. After standardisation, the station was demolished with the station building being preserved at the Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village.
