Mona Mona Mission
The Mona Mona Aboriginal Mission is a former Seventh-day Adventist mission for Aboriginal people established around 1913 near Kuranda, Queensland, Australia. In 1913, large numbers of people, particularly of the Djabugay people, were rounded up and forcibly taken to the mission. Until 1940 it was almost self-sufficient, growing its own food, and cutting and milling timber. After this period, soil fertility deteriorated and with the increasing costs, the mission soon became unviable. Also the city of Cairns was growing and needed more water. A decision was made to flood Flaggy Creek, which flowed through the mission land and would have flooded the mission houses. In 1962 the mission was closed and the people were removed to other missions in places such as Great Palm Island and Woorabinda. Seventh-day Adventist Church
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is an Adventism, Adventist Protestantism, Protestant Christian denomination which is distinguished by its observance of Saturday, the Names of the days of the week#Numbered days of the week, seventh day of the week in the Christian Gregorian calendar, (Gregorian) and the Hebrew calendar, as the Sabbath, and its emphasis on the imminent Second Coming (advent) of Jesus Christ. Aboriginal Australians are the various Indigenous peoples of the Mainland Australia, Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania, Fraser Island, Hinchinbrook Island, the Tiwi Islands, and Groote Eylandt, but excluding the Torres Strait Islands. The term Indigenous Australians refers to Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders collectively. It is generally used when both groups are included in the topic being addressed. Kuranda, Queensland
Kuranda is a rural town and locality on the Atherton Tableland in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , Kuranda had a population of 3,008 people. It is from Cairns, via the Kuranda Range road. It is surrounded by tropical rainforest and adjacent to the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. The town of Myola is also located within the locality of Kuranda (). Geography Kuranda is positioned on the eastern edge of the Atherton Tableland where the Barron River begins a steep descent to its coastal floodplain. The area is an important wildlife corridor between the Daintree/ Carbine Tableland area in the north and Lamb Range/Atherton Tableland in the south, two centres of biodiversity.
