Momina Klisura (Mesta)
Momina Klisura ( bg, Момина клисура, meaning ''Maiden's Gorge'') is a steep valley along the river Mesta in south-western Bulgaria, stretching about 25 km. Administratively, it is situated in the municipalities of Bansko and Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad Province. According to the legend, the gorge was named after a maiden, who fought the Ottoman Turks defending the fortress of Momina Kula and plunged into the abyss upon seeing that the stronghold was about to fall. Geography Momina Klisura forms the divide between the Pirin Mountains in the west and the westernmost ridge of the Rhodope Mountains, Dabrash, in the east. It links the south-easternmost part of the Razlog Valley in the north and the northernmost part of the Gotse Delchev Valley in the south. Retizhe
The Retizhe ( bg, Ретиже) is a river in south-western Bulgaria, a right tributary of the Mesta. The river is 19 km long and drains parts of the eastern slopes of the Pirin mountain range. The river takes its source from Pirin's largest and deepest glacial lake, Popovo, at an altitude of 2,234 m. At an altitude of 2,174 m near the Fish Popovi Lakes it is joined by two mountain streams — one from the north sloping down the summit of Polezhan (2,851 m), and one from the west coming from the Polezhanski Lakes. Further downstream another stream coming from the Kremenski Lakes flows into the Retizhe. It then flows in north-eastern direction in a deep valley, forming rapids and small waterfalls. Sofia
Sofia ( ; bg, София, Sofiya, ) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is situated in the Sofia Valley at the foot of the Vitosha mountain in the western parts of the country. Ilinden, Blagoevgrad Province
Ilinden ( bg, Илинден ) is a village in Hadzhidimovo Municipality, in Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria. It is located in a mountainous area, on the northern slopes the Stargach mountain. It is 14 kilometers southwest of Hadzidimovo Municipal Center and 18 kilometers southeast of Gotse Delchev. Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad Province
Gotse Delchev ( bg, Гоце Делчев ), is a town in Gotse Delchev Municipality in Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria. In 1951, the town was renamed after the Bulgarian revolutionary hero Gotse Delchev. It had hitherto been called Nevrokop (in bg, Неврокоп, ; in el, Άνω Νευροκόπι, ''Ano'' ; and in tr, Nevrokop). Nearby are the remains of a walled city established by the Romans in the 2nd century AD. Bansko
Bansko ( bg, Банско ) is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of the Pirin, Pirin Mountains at an elevation of 1200m AMSL, above sea level. It is a ski resort. Legends There are several legends about who founded Bansko. According to one, Bansko was founded by people who lived in Dobarsko, a village in Rila, itself, according to a legend, founded by the blinded army of Tsar Samuil of Bulgaria, Samuil. Simitli
Simitli ( bg, Симитли ) also known as Simitliya ( bg, Симитлия), is a town in Blagoevgrad Province in southwestern Bulgaria. It has a population of 7,454 and is located 17 km south of Blagoevgrad. It is the seat of Simitli Municipality. Geography The city of Simitli lies at the crossroads for the turn to Bansko and Pirin Mountains off the Sofia-Thessaloníki E-79. Gospodintsi (before 1934: ''Tsiropol'')is a village in Gotse Delchev Municipality, in Blagoevgrad Province, Bulgaria. It is situated on both sides of the Mesta river, 9 kilometers north of Gotse Delchev and 67 kilometers southeast of Blagoevgrad on the road Razlog - Gotse Delchev. One kilometer east of the center have been found remains of an old fortress from the Late Antiquity. The village is mentioned in 1900 year as settlement with 270 people of pomak origin.
