Modiba
Modiba is an artist management and music licensing company dedicated to international artists and social responsibility. Modiba Productions was founded in 2004 when Wesleyan University seniors Eric Herman and Jesse Brenner created an Afrobeat compilation CD, the profits of which were donated to humanitarian workers in Darfur. The album was called the Afrobeat Sudan Aid Project (ASAP), and has raised over $140,000 for Save the Children in Darfur. In 2007 Modiba signed its first artist, beginning the career of Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure, son of the legendary Ali Farka Toure. Acting as record label, Modiba released his self-titled debut and donated 10% of the album's proceeds to their Fight Malaria campaign in Toure's hometown, Niafunké. Vieux Farka Touré
Boureima "Vieux" Farka Touré (born 1981) is a Malian singer and guitarist. He is the son of Malian musician Ali Farka Touré. Biography Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981 to Ali Farka Touré. Despite his father's discouragement and his family's lineage as a tribe of soldiers, Touré secretly took up the guitar and enrolled in the ''Institut National des Arts'' in Bamako, Mali. In 2005, Eric Herman of Modiba expressed interest in producing an album for Touré; to do so, he had to acquire permission from Ali Touré, Toumani Diabaté, and other community elders. This led to his self-titled debut album, produced by Modiba and released by World Village on 12 February 2007. The album featured Toumani Diabaté as well as his late father, who died in 2006. Antibalas
Antibalas (Spanish for "bulletproof") is an American, Brooklyn-based afrobeat band that is modeled after Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Although their music generally follows the musical architecture and language of afrobeat, it incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa. History Founded in 1998 by Martín Perna as "Conjunto Antibalas", the group first performed on May 26, 1998, at St. Nicks Pub in Harlem at a poetry night organized by renowned visual artist Xaviera Simmons. Ali Farka Toure
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ( ar, عَلِيّ بْن أَبِي طَالِب; 600 – 661 common era, CE) was the last of four Rashidun, Rightly Guided Caliphs to rule Islam (r. 656 – 661) immediately after the death of Muhammad, and he was the first Shia Imam. The issue of his succession caused a major rift between Muslims and divided them into Shia Islam, Shia and Sunni Islam, Sunni groups. Niafunké
Niafunké is a small town on the Niger River in central Mali. The town is the administrative center (''chef-lieu'') of the commune of Soboundou in the Niafunké Cercle of the Tombouctou Region. Niafunké was the hometown of musician and farmer Ali Farka Touré, who moved there as an infant and went on to become the town's mayor in 2004. Omara "Bombino" Moctar (in Tifinagh ⴱⵓⵎⴱⵉⵏⵓ; born 1980) is a Nigerien Tuareg singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music is sung in Tamasheq and often addresses Tuareg geopolitical concerns. Bombino is the subject of the documentary film '' Agadez, the Music and the Rebellion''. Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars (also called Refugee All Stars) is a band from Sierra Leone which was formed by a group of refugees displaced to Guinea during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Since their return to Freetown in 2004, the band has toured extensively to raise awareness for humanitarian causes. The Touré-Raichel Collective
The Touré-Raichel Collective is a musical group led by Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Israeli singer and pianist Idan Raichel. The group's debut album, ''The Tel Aviv Session'', was released on Cumbancha in March 2012. History In 2008, after a chance meeting at an airport terminal in Berlin, Germany, Raichel and Touré forged a friendship with an intention to perform together in concert. Grupo Fantasma is a nine-piece Latin funk orchestra from Austin, Texas. Biography Formed in 2000 from the merger of two Austin acts, The Blimp and The Blue Noise Band, the band emerged with a biweekly gig at the Empanada Parlour in Austin in 2001.
