Mobile Clinic (sports)
The Mobile Clinic is a medical emergency facility, created by Dr. Claudio Costa (doctor), Claudio Costa to rescue riders injured during motorcycle races. In 1976, on Costa's initiative and with funding from Gino Amisano, founder and owner of the AGV, the first vehicle specifically designed to provide rapid medical intervention to injured riders still on the track. The mobile clinic began on the race of the World Championship in Motorcycle Grand Prix of Austria, in Salzburg on 1 May 1977. During the race for the Class 350, Patrick Fernandez, Franco Uncini, Hans Stadelmann, Dieter Braun and Johnny Cecotto were involved in a terrible accident at the fast curve at Fahrerlager. The clinic intervened, but were attacked by police dogs. The doctors persevered and their actions saved Uncini's life. Stadelmann died on the spot and Braun ended his career because of a serious eye injury. The mobile clinic became an institution on the motorcycle racing circuit, helping thousands of riders. Ref ... Claudio Costa (doctor)
Claudio Marcello Costa (born 20 February 1941, in Imola) is an Italian medical doctor and founder of the Mobile Clinic. Biography Costa graduated in medicine on 3 March 1967 and over the next years achieved three specializations: in 1971 in clinical orthopaedics and traumatology, in 1973 in orthopaedic physical therapy, and in 1980 in sports medicine. He is the son of Checco Costa, who was one of the leading organisers of international motorcycle racing and the creator of the Imola circuit. His commitment in rescuing riders starts right on the circuit of Imola, on 22 April 1957, when he saved the life of Geoff Duke, after a disastrous fall on the curve of the "mineral waters" while he was competing in the 500 class of the Golden Shell Cup on his Gilera. On that occasion, the young Claudio Costa managed to rescue Duke by dragging him from the track. AGV (initials for "Amisano Gino Valenza") is an Italian motorcycle helmet manufacturer active in motorcycle sport. Founded in 1947 by Gino Amisano, since 2007 the company is a subsidiary of Dainese, The AGV brand is well known in motorcycle sport. Franco Uncini (born 9 March 1955) is an Italian former professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racing. He was 1982 FIM Road Racing World Champion with Suzuki. He was inducted into the F.I.M. Dieter Braun
Dieter Braun (born 2 February 1943 in Ulm, Bavaria) is a former road racer of Grand Prix solo motorcycles from Germany. He won the 1970 FIM 125cc World Championship for Suzuki. In 1973, he rode a Yamaha TZ 250 to the 250 cc FIM world championship. Braun's victory at the 1970 Isle of Man TT was notable because he was one of only seven riders to have won an Isle of Man TT race in their first attempt. Due to the circuit's 37.7 mile length, it usually takes competitors two or three attempts before they learn its nuances. He is also known for an incident that occurred immediately after he won the East German Grand Prix in the 1971 season. As the West German national anthem was being played during the winner's ceremony, the East German crowd began singing the words to the anthem. Johnny Cecotto
Johnny Alberto Cecotto Persello (born 25 January 1956), better known as Johnny Cecotto, is a Venezuelan former professional Grand Prix motorcycle racer and auto racer. He rose to prominence as a teenage prodigy in 1975 when he became the youngest motorcycle road racing world champion at the age of 19. Despite the auspicious beginning to his motorcycle racing career, he suffered numerous injuries and mechanical problems which curtailed his success in motorcycle Grand Prix racing. At the age of 24, Cecotto turned his attention to auto racing where he reached the pinnacle of the sport as a Formula One driver. He later became a successful Touring Car racer.
