Mississippi Highway 587
Mississippi Highway 587 (MS 587) is a state highway in Mississippi. It runs north-south for approximately , beginning at the junction of U.S. Highway 98 (US 98), just past the community of Foxworth and ending in Monticello at US 84. MS 587 serves the counties of Lawrence and Marion. History MS 587 first appeared in maps in 1956, from US 98 to US 84. The majority of the section in Marion County was paved in hard surfacing, with the rest in gravel. The route north of Morgantown was removed from the map in 1967, and was added back in 1984, but not state maintained. It became state maintained by 1998. Foxworth, (also known as Nearest or West Columbia), is an unincorporated community and Census-designated place in Marion County, Mississippi. It is located near the intersection of U.S. Route 98 and Mississippi Highway 35, approximately three miles southwest of Columbia along the west bank of the Pearl River. History The community is named after Frank W. Foxworth, who settled the community after moving from the east side of the Pearl River. His father had moved from Marion County, South Carolina and settled near Columbia, Mississippi. Foxworth operated a grist mill, sawmill, and gin. The community is located on the former Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. Foxworth once had a spur line that connected the Hamilton-Uhl Lumber Company with the New Orleans Great Northern Railroad. Monticello is a town in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. Geography Monticello is in central Lawrence County, on the west side of the Pearl River. U.S. Route 84 runs through the north side of the town on a four-lane bypass. US 84 leads east to Prentiss and west to Interstate 55 in Brookhaven. Mississippi Highway 27 passes through the west side of Monticello, leading north to Crystal Springs and south to Tylertown. Morgantown, Marion County, Mississippi
Morgantown is an unincorporated community located on Mississippi Highway 587 in northwest Marion County, Mississippi, United States. History Native Americans were the first to inhabit this area. After 1800, other immigrants arrived and settled the area. Among the earliest were Lieutenant Colonel George Henry Nixon, Robert McGowan, Robert Baylor, Francis Barnes Lenoir, and William Thomas Lenoir. Morgantown was an early settlement on the Pearl River, and was originally known as LeNoir's Landing after William Thomas LeNoir. Robert Baylor, a Revolutionary War veteran and contractor originally from Virginia, was hired by LeNoir to construct a plantation home on the banks of the Pearl River. Baylor traveled to Mississippi with slaves owned by LeNoir. Baylor first lived in a one-room house, now known as the Newsom Home. The LeNoir House was completed in 1818.
