Mississippi Highway 331
Mississippi Highway 331 (MS 331) is a south-north state highway in the North Central Hills region of northern Mississippi, connecting MS 9 to MS 334. It is generally a narrow two-lane route. It starts on MS 9 southwest of Sarepta, and extends north to or near Tula and ends on MS 334 north of Tula. Route description MS 331 begins at an intersection with MS 9 in northern Calhoun County, roughly five miles north of Bruce and three miles west of Sarepta. It heads north through farmland for a couple of miles before entering the hilly, remote, wooded terrain of the Holly Springs National Forest. The highway then enters Lafayette County. MS 331 winds its way through hills of the National Forest for several miles before exiting and immediately passing through community of Tula. The highway now crosses the Yocona River before coming to an end at an intersection with MS 334 at the community of Cornish. Tula is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Lafayette County, Mississippi, United States. Tula is located on Mississippi Highway 331 west-southwest of Toccopola. ''Tula'' is a name either (sources vary) derived from the Chickasaw language meaning "rock", or a transfer from Tula, in Russia. It was first named as a CDP in the 2020 Census which listed a population of 197. History Tula was the location of the Tula Normal Institute and Business College. It was once believed that Tula was a site of petroleum deposits. Holly Springs National Forest
The Holly Springs National Forest (HSNF) was established by the United States Forest Service on June 15, 1936, during the tenure of United States Department of Agriculture Chief Forester Ferdinand A. Silcox. That same year, it was combined administratively with the Bienville, De Soto and Homochitto national forests, known collectively as "National Forests in Mississippi". The Holly Springs Ranger District controls of Forest Service land, interspersed with of privately owned properties, within the national forest's proclamation zone. Before the HSNF was established, much of the land was abandoned agricultural land with rapidly eroding soils. These rolling hills are now covered with loblolly and shortleaf pines, and upland hardwoods.
