Misery (novel)
''Misery'' is an American psychological horror thriller novel written by Stephen King and first published by Viking Press on June 8, 1987. The novel's narrative is based on the relationship of its two main characters – the romance novelist Paul Sheldon and his deranged self-proclaimed number one fan Annie Wilkes. When Paul is seriously injured following a car accident, former nurse Annie brings him to her home, where Paul receives treatment and doses of pain medication. Paul realizes that he is a prisoner and is forced to indulge his captor's whims. The novel's title has two meanings: it is the name carried by the central heroine of Paul's book series, and King described such a state of emotion during the novel's writing. He has stated that Annie is a stand-in for cocaine. King has outlined the creation of ''Misery'' in his memoirs, and mentioned that the image of Annie Wilkes came to him in a dream. "Misery" is a 1995 song performed by the Minneapolis rock band Soul Asylum. Although ''Let Your Dim Light Shine'' critically suffered in comparison to its predecessor, ''Grave Dancers Union'', the single, "Misery", reached number 20 on The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and number one on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in the US. The song featured prominently in Kevin Smith's 2006 movie ''Clerks II'' and on an episode of the TV show ''Hindsight''. It was also parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic as "Syndicated Inc." on his album ''Bad Hair Day''. ''Low Budget'' is the eighteenth studio album by English rock group the Kinks, released in 1979. Following the minor success of their 1978 album ''Misfits'', the band recorded the majority of the album in New York rather than London. Unlike the more nostalgic themes of many Kinks albums prior to ''Low Budget'', many of the album's songs allude to contemporaneous events. Musically, the album is a continuation of the band's "arena rock" phase, resulting in a more rock-based sound and more modern production techniques.
