Centre (French) or Sant (Haitian Creole; both meaning "Center") is one of the ten departments (french: départements, links=no; ht, depatman, links=no) of Haiti, located in the center of the country along the border with the Dominican Republic. Mirebalais ( ht, Mibalè) is a commune in the Centre department of Haiti, approximately 60 km northeast of Port-au-Prince on National Road 3. The city was established in 1702. American Rotarians have made a number of mission-type trips to the city and surrounding areas since the 1980s. Located along the hydroelectric power transmission grid, the city normally has electricity throughout the day and night. During the United Nations occupation of 2005, Nepalese troops were stationed in the city, using the city jail as their headquarters. A U.S. military C-17 cargo plane carried out a large airdrop of food and supplies here in the wake of the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Saut-d'Eau
Saut-d'Eau ( ht, Sodo) is a commune in the Mirebalais Arrondissement, in the Centre department of Haiti. It has 34,885 inhabitants. Its name is French for 'waterfall', named after a large waterfall called 'Le Saut'. It is said that this waterfall was created in the massive earthquake of May 7, 1842. The waterfall is approximately 100 feet high and is the tallest in Haiti. The area holds cultural significance in Haiti, to both Catholic and Vodou practitioners. In the 19th century, it is believed that the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (or the closely associated Erzulie Dantor, a Vodou loa) appeared on a palm tree there. Boucan-Carré
Boucan-Carré ( ht, Boukan Kare) is a commune in the Mirebalais Arrondissement, in the Centre department of Haiti. It has 48,700 inhabitants. Geography Boucan-Carré is a geographic expression is a huge area of land, most of which is covered in mountains and deep valleys. Agriculture and the production of charcoal made from cutting down trees are the primary ways to get by for the locals. The Boucan-Carré River cuts through the center of the town of Chambeau. Economy Since the destructive earthquake that struck the Port-au-Prince area in January 2010, many people are returning to family from that city which is causing further strain on the people and land.
