Miraflores, Baja California Sur
Miraflores is a small town in the Municipality of Los Cabos (Baja California Sur). Miraflores is located about 45 miles north of San Jose del Cabo, 2 km west of Highway 1, just to the east of the Sierra de la Laguna. Miraflores is 220 meters above sea level. As of 2010, the town had a population of 1,384. History The town's history dates back two centuries to when six English sailors deserted a whaling ship. They learned Spanish, converted to Catholicism and married into the community. The local cemetery has English family names on some of the old headstones. During the Mexican American War, following the Skirmish of Todos Santos the civil authorities of Miraflores delivered Mauricio Castro, who had replaced Manuel Pineda as commander of the Mexican forces in Baja California, to Lieutenant George L. Los Cabos (Baja California Sur)
Los Cabos () is a municipality located at the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, in the state of Baja California Sur. It encompasses the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (the municipal seat) linked by a thirty-two-km Resort Corridor of beach-front properties and championship golf courses. The area was remote and rural until the latter 20th century, when the Mexican government began to develop Cabo San Lucas for tourism, which then spread east to the municipal seat. Sierra De La Laguna
The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range at the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, and is the southernmost range of the Peninsular Ranges System. It is located in La Paz Municipality and Los Cabos Municipality of southern Baja California Sur state. The "Sierra de la Laguna High Point", at in elevation, is the highest point of the range and in Baja California Sur state. Ecology The southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, including the Sierra de la Laguna, was formerly an island in prehistoric times. Whaling is the process of hunting of whales for their usable products such as meat and blubber, which can be turned into a type of oil that became increasingly important in the Industrial Revolution. It was practiced as an organized industry as early as 875 AD. By the 16th century, it had risen to be the principal industry in the Basque coastal regions of Spain and France. The industry spread throughout the world, and became increasingly profitable in terms of trade and resources. Skirmish of Todos Santos (March 30, 1848), was the last clash of the Mexican–American War and ended eighteen months of hostilities in Baja California. Raid on San Antonio Following the relief of the Siege of San José del Cabo, Colonel Henry S. Burton, ordered a raid on Captain Manuel Pineda's headquarters at San Antonio on March 15, 1848. Mauricio Fernando Castro Matamoros (born August 11, 1981) is a Honduran footballer who currently plays for Atlético Choloma in the Honduran National League. USS Cyane (1837)
The second USS ''Cyane'' was a sloop-of-war in the United States Navy during the Mexican–American War. ''Cyane'' was launched 2 December 1837 by Boston Navy Yard. She was commissioned in May 1838, Commander John Percival in command. She sailed 24 June 1838 for duty in the Mediterranean, returning to Norfolk, Virginia 16 May 1841. She cleared 1 November 1841 for the Pacific Squadron, returning 1 October 1844. Sailing again for the Pacific 10 August 1845 with Passed Midshipman Benjamin F. B.
