Miquette Giraudy
Miquette Giraudy is a French keyboard player and vocalist, best known for her work in Gong, and with her partner Steve Hillage. She and Hillage form the core of the ambient band System 7. She has also worked as an actress, film editor and writer, in each role using different stage names. Early life Miquette Giraudy was born on 9 February 1953, in Nice, France. Film In the late 1960s Giraudy, under the name Monique Giraudy, became assistant to French film maker Jackie Raynal. She has script and assistant editing credits on the 1969 Barbet Schroeder film ''More''. Getting in front of the camera she then appeared, under the name Marsiale Giraudy, in Jean-Pierre Prévost's 1971 film ''Jupiter'', and, as Monique Giraudy, played the role of Monique in Schroeder's 1972 film '' La Vallée''. ''La Vallée'', also known as ''Obscured by Clouds'', is a 1972 French film written and directed by Barbet Schroeder. The film stars Bulle Ogier as Viviane, a woman who goes on a strange and accidental voyage of self-discovery through the New Guinea bush. Pink Floyd recorded an album, ''Obscured by Clouds'', as the soundtrack to the film. After recording had finished, the band fell out with the film company, prompting them to release the soundtrack album as ''Obscured by Clouds'', rather than ''La Vallée''. In response, the film was retitled ''La Vallée (Obscured by Clouds)'' on its release. Canterbury Scene
The Canterbury scene (or Canterbury sound) was a musical scene centred on the town of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Associated with progressive rock, the term describes a loosely-defined, improvisational style that blended elements of jazz, rock, and psychedelia. These musicians played together in numerous bands, with ever-changing and overlapping personnel, creating some similarities in their musical output. ''Rainbow Dome Musick'' is the fifth studio album by Steve Hillage, originally released in 1979. It is a departure from his previous albums, consisting of two long ambient songs recorded in collaboration with his long-time partner Miquette Giraudy. Background and recording The album was commissioned for performance at the 1979 Mind-Body-Spirit Festival, held at Olympia London. It was recorded at Om in January 1979. The equipment engineer was John Newsham. The Rainbow Dome concept was created by Rupert Atwill. ''Motivation Radio'' is the third studio album by British art rock musician Steve Hillage. Whilst touring in the United States in promotion of his previous album '' L'' (1976), Hillage grew disillusioned with the progressive rock tag attached to him by the media and fans, and disliked their attitude towards funk music, which Hillage was a big fan of. Hillage wanted to create a funk-influenced album as he was predominately listening to artists such as Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire. Originally written as ''The Red Album'' in early 1977, it was retitled ''Motivation Radio'' prior to recording. Hiring electronic innovator Malcolm Cecil, formerly of the pioneering Tonto's Expanding Head Band, to produce and engineer the album, ''Motivation Radio'' introduces Hilage's new rhythm section of drummer Joe Blocker and bassist Reggie McBride and was primarily recorded in Los Angeles, California in July 1977. ''L'' is the second studio album by British progressive rock musician Steve Hillage. It was recorded primarily in New York, at the Secret Sound, Woodstock, N.Y., and was produced and engineered by Todd Rundgren, using musicians from Todd Rundgren's band Utopia and others. According to liner notes supplied with the US pressing, Rundgren had only just become aware of Hillage, and following a letter from Hillage to Rundgren, and a reply from Rundgren, Hillage travelled to New York to meet, and the agreement to work together flowed from that. The cover features a clean-shaven Hillage (most of the publicity shots of Hillage during the 1970s show him with a full beard) holding his guitar, brightly backlit. Unusually for Hillage, half the songs on this album are covers. ''Fish Rising'' is the debut solo album by English guitarist Steve Hillage, recorded and released in 1975. The album was recorded just prior to Hillage's departure from the band Gong, and many of the players on this album are from that band: Bassist Mike Howlett, drummer Pierre Moerlen, keyboardist Tim Blake and saxophonist Didier Malherbe. In 2007, Virgin issued a re-mastered version with two bonus tracks. Gong are a progressive rock band that incorporates elements of jazz and space rock into their musical style. The group was formed in Paris in 1967 by Australian musician Daevid Allen and English vocalist Gilli Smyth. Band members have included Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett, Pierre Moerlen, Bill Laswell and Theo Travis. Others who have played on stage with Gong include Don Cherry, Chris Cutler, Bill Bruford, Brian Davison, Dave Stewart and Tatsuya Yoshida. ''Shamal'' is the sixth studio album released under the name Gong and was released by Virgin Records on 13 February 1976 The album, produced by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was recorded in December 1975. The album was recorded by a unique line-up referred to later as "Shamal-Gong". It is usually regarded as a transitional album between Daevid Allen's incarnation of the band and the Pierre Moerlen-led fusion line-up of the late 1970s. Reception Reviewing the album for the website Sputnikmusic, Robert Davis said: The greatest thing about ''Shamal'' is that it's so versatile. ''You'' is the fifth studio album by the progressive rock band Gong, released by Virgin Records in October 1974. It is the last album by Daevid Allen's iteration of the group until 1992's ''Shapeshifter''. Recorded at Virgin's Manor Studios in Oxfordshire, England, side 1 was mixed at Pye Studios, Marble Arch, London, while side 2 was mixed at The Manor. It was produced by Simon Heyworth and Gong "under the universal influence of C.O.I.T., the Compagnie d'Opera Invisible de Thibet", and also engineered by Heyworth.
