Minnesota State Highway 37 (MN 37) is a highway in northeast Minnesota, which runs from its intersection with U.S. 169 / State Highway 73 in Hibbing and continues east to its eastern terminus at its intersection with State Highway 135 in Gilbert. Highway 37 serves as a direct route between Hibbing and U.S. Highway 53. Route description State Highway 37 serves as an east–west route between Hibbing, Eveleth, and Gilbert in northeast Minnesota. The Wellstone Memorial and Historic site is located three miles east of the junction of U.S. 53 / Highway 37 / Bodas Road at Fayal Township near Eveleth. The site honors Senator Paul Wellstone and seven others who died in an October 25, 2002 plane crash. Hibbing, Minnesota
Hibbing is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 16,214 at the 2020 census. The city was built on mining the rich iron ore of the Mesabi Iron Range and still relies on that industrial activity today. At the edge of town is the world's largest open-pit iron mine, the Hull–Rust–Mahoning Open Pit Iron Mine. It is the hometown of famous singer Bob Dylan and former Governor of Minnesota Rudy Perpich. Gilbert is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,799 at the 2010 census. State Highway 37 (MN 37) and State Highway 135 (MN 135) are two of the main routes in Gilbert. Gilbert is part of the Quad Cities, with Virginia, Eveleth, and Mountain Iron. Eveleth is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,718 at the 2010 census. U.S. Highway 53 and State Highway 37 (MN 37) are two of the main routes in Eveleth. Eveleth was the site of the conflict that resulted in the court case ''Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Co.'', and the film based on it, '' North Country''. Minnesota State Highway 135 (MN 135) is a highway in northeast Minnesota, which runs from its interchange with U.S. Highway 53 in the city of Virginia and continues northeast to its northern terminus at its intersection with State Highway 1 in Tower. The route is also known as the historic Vermilion Trail from Biwabik to Tower. Highway 135 is also known as "Main Street" within the city of Biwabik. Paul Wellstone
Paul David Wellstone (July 21, 1944 – October 25, 2002) was an American academic, author, and politician who represented Minnesota in the United States Senate from 1991 until he was killed in a plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota, in 2002. A member of the Democratic Party ( DFL), Wellstone was a leader of the populist and progressive wings of the party. Born in Washington, D.C., Wellstone grew up in Northern Virginia. He went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor's of Arts and a doctorate in political science. In 1969, Wellstone was hired as a professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where he taught until his election to the Senate in 1990.
