Minnesota Senate Election, 2012
The 2012 Minnesota Senate election was held in the U.S. state of Minnesota on November 6, 2012, to elect members to the Senate of the 88th and 89th Minnesota Legislatures. A primary election was held in several districts on August 14, 2012. The Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL) won a majority of seats, defeating the majority of the Republican Party of Minnesota. This was the first election for the Republicans since it won a majority of seats in the 2010 election, its first since the return of partisan elections to the Senate in 1976. The new Legislature convened on January 8, 2013. Minnesota Senate
The Minnesota Senate is the upper house of the Legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota. At 67 members, half as many as the Minnesota House of Representatives, it is the largest upper house of any U.S. state legislature. Floor sessions are held in the west wing of the State Capitol in Saint Paul. Committee hearings, as well as offices for senators and staff, are located north of the State Capitol in the Minnesota Senate Building. Each member of the Minnesota Senate represents approximately 80,000 constituents. History The Minnesota Senate held its first regular session on December 2, 1857. Tom Saxhaug
Tom Saxhaug (born February 22, 1948) is a Minnesota politician and former member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), he represented District 5, which included portions of Beltrami, Cass, Hubbard, and Itasca counties in the northern part of the state. Early life, education, and career Saxhaug completed his secondary education at Grand Rapids High School in Grand Rapids and later received a B.A. from St. Olaf College in Northfield. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served on the Grand Rapids City Council from 1995 to 1997, and was an Itasca County Commissioner from 1997 to 2003. He is a retired insurance agent. Ann Rest
Ann H. Rest (born April 24, 1942) is an American politician and President pro tempore of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represents District 45, which includes portions of the western suburbs of Hennepin County in the Twin Cities metro area. Early life, education, and career Rest attended Rich Township High School in Park Forest, Illinois, graduating in 1960, then went on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where she received her B.A. in Latin and Greek. Julie Bunn (born November 23, 1957) is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives representing District 56A, which includes portions of Washington County in the eastern Twin Cities metropolitan area. Karin Housley ( ; née Locke; born January 20, 1964) is an American politician, businesswoman, and member of the Minnesota Senate. A Republican, she represents Forest Lake, Stillwater, and the surrounding St. Croix Valley. Housley was the Republican nominee in Minnesota's 2018 special election for the United States Senate. David Osmek
David Joseph Osmek ( ; born October 11, 1964) is an American politician and businessman who is a member of the Minnesota Senate. He has served as the 16th List of presidents of the Minnesota Senate, President of the Minnesota Senate since 2022. Mary Kiffmeyer
Mary Kiffmeyer (born December 29, 1946) is an American politician. She served as Minnesota Secretary of State from 1999 to 2007 and went on to serves in the Minnesota legislature. A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, she previously represented District 30, which included parts of Hennepin, Sherburne, and Wright counties. Joseph R. "Joe" Gimse (born July 31, 1957) is a Minnesota politician and a former member of the Minnesota Senate who represented District 13, which included portions of Kandiyohi, Pope and Stearns counties in the west central part of the state.
