The Minnesota Blue Ox were a professional roller hockey team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States that played in Roller Hockey International. History Formed in the wake of the Minnesota Arctic Blast, who played at Target Center in 1994, the Blue Ox joined RHI and were placed in the five-team Central Division ( Buffalo Stampede, Chicago Cheetahs, Detroit Motor City Mustangs, St. Louis Vipers). After a 13-11-0 regular season (second in the Central), Minnesota was the fourth-seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Blue Ox were quickly eliminated in two games (best-of 3 series) by the fifth-seeded New Jersey Rockin' Rollers. Roller Hockey International was a professional inline hockey league that operated in North America from 1993 to 1999. It was the first major professional league for inline hockey. Mariucci Arena
3M Arena at Mariucci is the home arena for the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's ice hockey team of the University of Minnesota. The arena is located on the Minneapolis campus and seats approximately 10,000 fans (9,600 in the main bowl plus club room and suite seating). The arena opened in 1993 and is named after John Mariucci, the longtime Gopher coach who is considered the "godfather of Minnesota hockey." Under the gate is a quote from Mariucci: "Through these gates walk the greatest fans in college hockey." The ice sheet is Olympic sized (). The Chicago Cheetahs were a professional roller hockey team based in Chicago, Illinois, United States that played in Roller Hockey International. The Cheetahs joined the league in 1994. The Cheetahs were part-owned by basketball legend George Mikan. Former Chicago Blackhawks star Al Secord was part of the Cheetahs in 1994, as were future Chicago Wolves players Bobby Nardella, Jeff Rohlicek and Tim Breslin. The Cheetahs played at the UIC Pavilion during the 1994 regular season in front of an average of 2,000 fans per game, but moved their playoff home games to the Odeum in suburban Villa Park to save money.
