The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados is a key Barbadian government agency responsible for regulating, maintaining, and developing Barbados's external relations and the nature of trading with foreign countries. The Ministry is also responsible for the country's representation at the United Nations and advises other Ministries and State authorities when the latter have dealings with foreign governments or institutions. It is based on Culloden Road, in the nation's capital Bridgetown. The Government of Barbados (GoB), is a unitary parliamentary republic, where the President of Barbados represents as the head of state and the Prime Minister of Barbados represents as the head of government. Structure The country has a bicameral legislature and a political party system, based on universal adult suffrage and fair elections. The Senate has 21 members, appointed by the President, 12 on the advice of the Prime Minister, two on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition, and seven at the President's sole discretion. The House of Assembly has 30 members, all elected. Both houses debate all legislation. However, the House of Assembly may override Senate's rejection of money bills and other bills except bills amending the Constitution. The Cabinet are individuals of Barbados which execute the duties of the Government of Barbados. Under a Parliamentary republic , these powers are vested nominally by the President of Barbados, but are exercised in practice by a Cabinet of Ministers, presided over by the Prime Minister of Barbados. The Prime Minister is formally appointed by the President: the President must appoint, as Prime Minister, someone who can control a majority of votes in the House of Assembly. Jerome Xavier Walcott FRCS (born April 2, 1957) is a Barbadian diplomat and politician currently serving as foreign minister of Barbados. Biography Walcott was raised in Bridgetown and was educated at St. Angela's Primary and also studied at London Business School. He graduated from University of the West Indies in 1982 and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Walcott was MP between 2003 and 2008, and since 2001 was Leader of Government Business in the Senate and later served as minister of health under the tenure of Owen Arthur. Between 1995 and 1997, he served as Assistant Secretary of the Labour Party and has been its chairman as of 2021. He was also appointed as a senator in 2013.
