Coat Of Arms Of The Gambia
The coat of arms of the Gambia has been in use since 18 November 1964. It depicts two lions holding an axe and hoe, supporting a shield that depicts another pair of hoe and axe, crossed. Atop the shield is set the heraldic helmet and an oil palm as a crest. At the bottom is the national motto: Progress – Peace – Prosperity. The Gambian coat of arms also appeared in the fly of the Gambian air force ensign. Overview The two lions represent the colonial history of The Gambia as part of the British Empire. The crossed axe and hoe represent the importance of agriculture to The Gambia. They are also considered to represent the two major ethnic groups of The Gambia: the Mandinka and the Fulani. The crest, a palm tree, is also a vital national tree. The design was created by Nicholas Potin, a government employee with the Department of Surveys, who won a national competition to design it. Momodou Alieu Bah
Momodou Alieu Bah is a former Gambian senior army officer, who served as Yahya Jammeh's last Minister of the Interior. Bah served as Minister of the Interior from 19 September 2016 to 18 January 2017, when he resigned as a result of the constitutional crisis. Military and political career Bah has been a senior general in the Gambian Army. In 2006, he was arrested for taking part in an alleged coup attempt against President Yahya Jammeh, and sentenced to 25 years. He was pardoned in 2009 following testimony he gave for the prosecution at the trial of Lang Tombong Tamba. He was reinstated into the Gambian Armed Forces, where he became Director of Finance. In September 2016, Bah replaced Ousman Sonko as Minister of the Interior but resigned in January 2017 when Jammeh's term as President drew to a close. Ousman Sonko (born 9 January 1969) is a former Gambian politician. He served as Interior Minister between 2006 and 2016 under the Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh. During this period he is suspected of taking part in acts of torture, including in detention centers. Youth Sonko was born in Serekunda. Military career Sonko had a career in the military, starting in 1989. In early 2000 he served as commander of the State Guards Battalion. He later served as Inspector General of The Gambia Police Force before being appointed to Interior Minister. He was appointed as Interior Minister on 23 October 2006. Yankuba Sonko is a Gambian police officer who was the Inspector General of Police in the Gambia from 2010 to 2014, and from 2015 to 2017. Career Sonko joined the Gambia Police Force in 1982 and was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1984, and to Cadet Officer in 1988. He studied at the Nigerian Police Training School in 1990, and, upon his return in 1991, he helped to found the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) and was posted to Barra Police Station in the North Bank Region. He was appointed as the force's first Public Relations Officer (PRO) in 1993 and was posted to Kanifing Division as second-in-command in 1994. In 1995, he became the officer commanding Kanifing Division.
