The Isle of Man Government ( gv, Reiltys Ellan Vannin) is the government of the Isle of Man. The formal head of the Isle of Man Government is the Lieutenant Governor, the personal representative of Charles III. The executive head is the Chief Minister. Douglas, the largest town in the Isle of Man, is its capital and seat of government, where most Government offices and the parliament chambers (Tynwald) are located. The Civil Service has more than 2,000 employees and the total number of public sector employees including civil servants, teachers, nurses, police, etc. was 7,413 full time equivalent at 31 March 2019. This is just under 10% of the population of the Island and 21% of the working population. The Department for Enterprise (''Rheynn Gastid Dellal'') is one of eight departments of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010 as the Department for Economic Development, largely replacing the former Department of Trade and Industry as well as taking on the tourism function from the former Department of Tourism and Leisure and several other functions from the Isle of Man Treasury and the former Department of Education. David Cretney
David Clifford Cretney (born 15 January 1954) is a former Manx politician. He was, until March 2014, Minister of Infrastructure in the Isle of Man Government, and had formerly headed the Departments of Community, Culture & Leisure, Trade & Industry, and Tourism & Leisure. He was a Member of the House of Keys for the Manx Labour Party, representing Douglas South from 1985. He has been a member of the upper house, the Legislative Council since 2015. Before going into politics, Cretney was a shop manager (1977–85) and he was also a businessman in the period 1985–2012. In December 2012 and early January 2013 he closed down his two bargain-basement retail outlets having chosen not to renew the leases on either of his premises. The House of Keys () is the directly elected lower house of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man, the other branch being the Legislative Council. History The oldest known reference to the name is in a document of 1417, written in Latin by an English scholar, which refers to (the 'Keys of Mann') and (the 'Keys of Law'). There is a dispute, however, over the origin of the name. The word ''keys'' is thought by some to be an English corruption of a form of the Norse verb ('to choose'). However, a more likely explanation is that it is a mishearing of the Manx-language term for 'four and twenty': , the House having always had 24 members. Alexander Frank Downie, OBE, MLC (born 1945, Douglas) is a Manx politician and former marine engineer. He is a member of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man and a former Trade and Industry Minister of the Government. He was a Member of the House of Keys from 1991 until his election to the Legislative Council in 2005. Before going into politics, he was marine seagoing engineer for various companies and self-employed in the heating maintenance business. Personal life Downie was born in 1945 in Douglas, Isle of Man. The Legislative Council ( gv, Yn Choonceil Slattyssagh) is the upper chamber of Tynwald, the legislature of the Isle of Man. The abbreviation "LegCo" is often used. David North MBIM (born 1942) is a British politician, a former Minister in the Isle of Man Government. He was born in Bradford of Manx parents and educated at Douglas High School. He then pursued a career abroad before returning as Managing Director of John North Ltd, J Smylie & Sons Ltd, and Chairman of House & Home Ltd. He was also the Isle of Man correspondent for the Financial Times. At the 1988 by election he was elected MHK for Middle and remained in post until the 2001 General Election when he retired. Edmund Lowey MLC (born 12 February 1938) is a Manx politician, who is a Member of the Legislative Council in the Isle of Man. Early life Edmund was born in 1938 in Ballasalla and was educated at Castle Rushen and then worked for the Ronaldsway Aircraft Company from 1964, until 1975. He then stood for the Manx Labour Party in the House of Keys election of 1975 and was elected as one of the MHKs for Rushen. He continued in this position until his elevation to the Council in 1982. Allan Bell
Allan Robert Bell (born 20 June 1947) is a Manx politician who was the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, having been elected to that position on 11 October 2011. He was an Independent Member of the House of Keys for Ramsey from 1984 to September 2016, and served in several different ministerial roles. He was replaced as Chief Minister on 4 October 2016. Bernard May MHK (born 6 July 1941) is a British politician and entrepreneur, who was a Member of the House of Keys in the Isle of Man and Government Minister. Early life and career Born on 6 July 1941 to Harry Turner May and Lilian Freda (née Nicholl) in Hyde, Cheshire, he was raised on the Isle of Man and educated at Douglas High School. He later went on to own and operate a taxi company on the island and was also a member of Douglas Town Council before he was elected as a Member of the House of Keys for Douglas North in 1985 for the Manx Labour Party. He was re-elected in 1986 and 1991 before losing to John Houghton in 1996, following which he became a bus driver. In 1998, he unsuccessfully stood again. Ian Anderson (Manx Politician)
Robert John Gurney Anderson (16 June 1925 – 11 January 2005), known as Ian Anderson, was a President of the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man. Mr Anderson was born in Glencross, Rathmullan, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1925. He left school at the age of 13 and joined the Belfast Technical College before moving to the Isle of Man in 1946. In 1963 Ian was elected as a member of Patrick commissioners and remained as such until being elected as member of the House of Keys for Glenfaba. In 1982 he was elevated to the Legislative Council and remained a member until retiring from Tynwald in 1993. In 1988 he was elected as the, second ever non-Governor, President of the Legislative Council. He served until 1990 when the constitution was altered and Sir Charles Kerruish became ex officio President. Ian Anderson also held many Ministerial-level appointments during his career.
