The Agriculture Minister of Belgium is the political minister office responsible for agriculture. In 2001, the Regions became mainly responsible for agriculture as part of the fifth state reform. Agriculture
Agriculture or farming is the practice of cultivating plants and livestock. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that enabled people to live in cities. The history of agriculture began thousands of years ago. After gathering wild grains beginning at least 105,000 years ago, nascent farmers began to plant them around 11,500 years ago. Sheep, goats, pigs and cattle were domesticated over 10,000 years ago. Plants were independently cultivated in at least 11 regions of the world. Industrial agriculture based on large-scale monoculture in the twentieth century came to dominate agricultural output, though about 2 billion people still depended on subsistence agriculture. Vera Dua
Vera Agnes Roger Dua (Ghent, 25 October 1952) was the Party Chair of the Flemish green party Groen! between 2003 and 2007. She graduated in 1975 as agricultural engineer and attained a PhD in agricultural science 11 years later. She has been a member of Agalev since 1984 and appeared in the local assembly of Ghent in 1989. Two years later she was elected to the Belgian Chamber. In 1995 she switched to the Flemish Parliament. After a few years of fierce opposition she became the minister of agriculture and environment. As minister she focused on expanding nature reserves and protecting people's health. After her party suffered a heavy blow in the 2003 federal election she resigned as minister. On 15 November 2003 Agalev changed its name to Groen! and Vera Dua was elected chairman. Guy Lutgen
Guy Lutgen (19 April 1936 – 26 July 2020) was a Belgian politician and member of Centre démocrate humaniste, Christian Social Party. Lutgen was born in on 19 April 1936. He studied philosophy at the Catholic University of Leuven (1834–1968), Catholic University of Leuven and taught history and Latin at the seminary in Bastogne until 1977. Lutgen began his political career in 1964, winning a seat on the Bastogne communal council, which he retained until 2000. He was also mayor of Bastogne from 1976 to 2000. Between 1977 and 1995, Lutgen was a member of the Senate (Belgium), Senate, representing an electoral district encompassing Arlon, Marche-en-Famenne, and Bastogne. Daniel Ducarme (8 March 1954, Liège – 28 August 2010) was a Belgian politician and former Minister-President of the Brussels-Capital Region. Background and political affiliation Starting his political career in the Liberal Reformist Party (PRL), Ducarme served as mayor of Thuin in Wallonia from 1988 to 2000, becoming party president in 1999. Kris Peeters (; born 18 May 1962) is a Belgian politician of the Christian Democratic and Flemish who has been serving as vice-president of the European Investment Bank (EIB) since 2021.
