The Minister for Foreign Affairs is the Ghana government official who is responsible for overseeing the country's foreign policy and international diplomacy. The minister is usually one of the most senior members of Cabinet. The Minister for Foreign Affairs since January 2017 has been Honorable Shirley Ayorkor Botchway. The ministry is at present combined with other portfolios to form the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration under the government of Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party. Victor Owusu
''For the rapper with the same birth name, see V.I.C.'' Victor Owusu (26 December 1923 – 16 December 2000) was a Ghanaian politician and lawyer. He has also served as Attorney General and Justice minister as well as foreign minister on two occasions. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Third Republic from 1979 to 1981. Early life Owusu was born on 26 December 1923 in Agona, Ashanti Region. Owusu was an economist who later trained as a lawyer. He was a prominent member of the National Liberation Movement which stood for the 1956 elections in the Gold Coast prior to elections. During the First Republic, he was detained under the Preventive Detention Act (1958) by the Kwame Nkrumah government. Provisional National Defence Council
The Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) was the name of the Ghanaian government after the People's National Party's elected government was overthrown by Jerry Rawlings, the former head of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, in a coup d'état on 31 December 1981. He remained in power until 7 January 1993. In a statement, Rawlings said that a "holy war" was necessary due to the PNP's failure to provide effective leadership and the collapse of the national economy and state services. The PNDC was a military dictatorship that induced civilians to participate in governance. Most of its members were civilians. Its policies reflected a revolutionary government that was pragmatic in its approach. Obed Asamoah
Obed Yao Asamoah (born 6 February 1936) is a Ghanaian lawyer, academic and politician. Asamoah was the longest serving foreign minister and Attorney General of Ghana under Jerry Rawlings from 1981 to 1997. Asamoah was educated at King's College London and at Columbia University. People's National Party (Ghana)
The People's National Party (PNP) was the ruling party in Ghana during the Third Republic (1979-1981). All political parties in Ghana were disbanded following the January 1972 military coup led by Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong. When political activities resumed in 1979, there were five parties contesting the elections. The PNP claimed to represent the Nkrumah heritage. Isaac Chinebuah
Dr.Isaac K. Chinebuah (7 October 1929 – 8 June 2006) was an academic and the foreign minister in the People's National Party (PNP) government of the Third Republic of Ghana. Career Dr. Chinebuah was a former headmaster of Achimota School from 1963 to 1966 and also a former lecturer at the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ghana, Legon. He was a Minister for Education and Information in Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party government in the First Republic of Ghana. Dr. Chinebuah became the Member of Parliament for Nzema East (now Ellembelle) constituency after the 1979 elections. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the PNP government by Dr. Hilla Limann in the Third Republic from 1979 until its overthrow in a coup d'état on December 31, 1981. Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, Ghana
The Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) was the government of Ghana from June 4, 1979, to September 24, 1979. 4 June military coup The AFRC came to power in a coup that removed the Supreme Military Council, another military regime, from power. The June 4 coup was preceded by an abortive attempt on May 15, 1979, when Flt. Lt. Jerry Rawlings and other ranks were arrested. Their trial only served to make them popular till they were eventually released on the morning of June 4 by young officers and noncommissioned officers inspired by Rawlings. During the fighting that ensued throughout the day, a number of military personnel lost their lives. Gloria Amon Nikoi
Gloria Adwoa Amon Nikoi, née Addae (6 June 1927 – 10 November 2010) was as a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the Foreign Minister in 1979 under the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) government. She was the first Ghanaian woman to hold this position. Career She attended Achimota College. Nikoi was the Deputy Chief of Mission to the United Nations from 1969 to 1974.
