The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs is a position in the Cabinet of Western Australia, first created in 1947 during the McLarty–Watts Ministry. The Department of Aboriginal Affairs (Western Australia) is the former government authority that was involved with the matters of the Aboriginal population of Western Australia. Aborigines Protection Board Prior to the creation of the Aborigines Department in 1898, there had been an Aborigines Protection Board, which operated between 1 January 1886 and 1 April 1898 as a Statutory authority. It was created by the ''Aborigines Protection Act 1886'' (WA), also known as the '' Half-caste act'', ''An Act to provide for the better protection and management of the Aboriginal natives of Western Australia, and to amend the law relating to certain contracts with such Aboriginal natives'' (statute 25/1886); ''An Act to provide certain matters connected with the Aborigines'' (statute 24/1889). Victor Doney
Victor Doney (25 December 1881 – 12 October 1961) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1928 to 1956. He served as a minister in the government of Sir Ross McLarty. Doney was born in Lerryn, Cornwall, England, to Rebecca (née Yeo) and Frank Doney. He came to Western Australia in 1912, and settled on a farm at Mullewa. Doney was elected to the Mullewa Road Board in 1914, and served as chairman for a period, but the following year enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. He served in France with the 28th Battalion, and in July 1916 was wounded in action. Doney returned to Australia after being discharged in June 1919, and worked as a property inspector for the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia in Mullewa and Narrogin. Carmen Lawrence
Carmen Mary Lawrence (born 2 March 1948) is an Australian academic and former politician who was the Premier of Western Australia from 1990 to 1993, the first woman to become the premier of an Australian state. A member of the Labor Party, she later entered federal politics as a member of the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2007, and served as a minister in the Keating Government. Lawrence was born in Northam, Western Australia. She studied psychology at the University of Western Australia, obtaining a doctorate in 1983, and before entering politics worked as a lecturer and researcher. Lawrence was elected to state parliament in 1986, and became a government minister in 1988. Peter Dowding
Peter McCallum Dowding SC (born 6 October 1943) is an Australian lawyer and former politician who served as the 24th Premier of Western Australia, from 25 February 1988 until his forced resignation on 12 February 1990. He was a member of parliament from 1980 to 1990. Dowding graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws, and he subsequently worked as a solicitor and barrister. In 1980, he was elected to the North Province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, representing the Labor Party. He entered cabinet when Labor won the 1983 state election, and changed ministries several times over the ensuing years due to cabinet reshuffles. Ernest Francis Bridge, AM (15 December 193631 March 2013) was an Australian parliamentarian and country music singer. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 2001, representing the electorate of Kimberley, first as a Labor Party representative (1980–1996) and then as a Labor Independent MP (1996–2001). Brian Thomas Burke (born 25 February 1947) is an Australian former politician who was the 23rd premier of Western Australia from 25 February 1983 to his resignation on 25 February 1988. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 30 March 1973 to 25 February 1988, representing the electoral districts of Balga and Balcatta at various points, and was the leader of the Australian Labor Party in Western Australia from 18 September 1981 to 25 February 1988. Keith Wilson (Western Australian Politician)
Keith James Wilson (born 5 September 1936) is an Australian politician. He was born in Kalgoorlie to miner James Wilson and Barbara Jean McKenzie. He attended local public schools and became a teacher, graduating in 1955. After a period teaching at Mount Barker, he trained for the Anglican clergy from 1959 to 1961. From 1961 to 1965 he was the assistant priest for the Scarborough parish, and from 1965 to 1967 he taught in the United Kingdom. On 24 August 1968, he married Angela Joy Hankin, with whom he had two sons. From 1969 he was an Anglican clergyman at Balga. In 1977 he was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Dianella; he represented this seat until 1983, Nollamara until 1989, and then Dianella again until 1993. Minister for Community Services is a position in the government of Western Australia, currently held by Sabine Winton of the Labor Party. The position was first created after the 1943 state election, for the government of John Willcock. It was abolished in 1947 and not recreated until 1971, but has existed in most governments since then. George Meredith Cornell (3 September 1910 – 6 July 1967) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 until his death. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Biography Cornell was born in Boulder, Western Australia, to Mary Ann (née Daws) and James Cornell. Sir David Brand KCMG (1 August 1912 – 15 April 1979) was an Australian politician. A member of the Liberal Party, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1945 to 1975, and also the 19th and longest-serving Premier of Western Australia, serving four terms from the 1959 to the 1971 election. John Brady (Australian Politician)
John Joseph Brady (19 January 1904 – 5 May 1993) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1948 to 1974. He served as a minister in the government of Albert Hawke. Brady was born in Perth to Mary (née Fleming) and Thomas Brady. His family moved to Geraldton in 1911, where he attended Stella Maris College. After leaving school, he worked on the railways for a period and then in a flour mill in Dongara, where he eventually became acting manager. Brady moved back to Perth in 1929 and settled in Midland, where he became involved in the union movement.
