George Cornell (politician)
George Meredith Cornell (3 September 1910 – 6 July 1967) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 until his death. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Biography Cornell was born in Boulder, Western Australia, to Mary Ann (née Daws) and James Cornell. His father was also a member of parliament. Cornell was raised in Perth, and after leaving school studied accounting. He worked for periods at the Bank of Western Australia and the Agricultural Bank of Western Australia, and later at private firms in Perth and Kellerberrin (a small Wheatbelt town). The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. The Shire of Kellerberrin is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about west of Merredin and about east of Perth, the state capital. The Shire covers an area of and its seat of government is the town of Kellerberrin. History On 24 July 1908, the Kellerberrin Road District was created, and included large parts of what is now Tammin, Wyalkatchem and Trayning. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire of Kellerberrin after the ''Local Government Act 1960'' was enacted, which reformed all remaining road districts into shires. Edgar Henry Mead Lewis (12 February 1902 – 26 April 1992) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1958 to 1974, representing the seat of Moore. Lewis was born in Fremantle, and attended Fremantle Boys' School. He left school at an early age to work as a farmhand, and in 1924 he and his brother purchased their own property at Miling. They eventually acquired another three farms, and Lewis became a member of various farming industry groups (including a director of what is now Wesfarmers). James Frederick Craig (22 December 1911 – 12 January 1989) was an Australian farmer and politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1959 to 1971, representing the seat of Toodyay. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Craig was born in Kalgoorlie to Hilda Dagma (née Thornton) and James Burnett Craig. He attended Scotch College, Perth, and then found work as a clerk with Western Australian Government Railways, working at Welshpool. Craig enlisted in the Australian Army in 1939, and saw active duty in the Middle Eastern theatre. He initially returned to the railways after being discharged in 1942, and then from 1947 served as secretary and accountant for a cooperative based in the Swan Valley. Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 31 March 1962 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The Liberal-Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir David Brand, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Albert Hawke. The election resulted in a confirmation of the status quo, with the only apparent seat changes since the 1959 election being due to the changes of affiliation of the two Independent Liberal members. Minister for Police is a position in the government of Western Australia, currently held by Paul Papalia of the Labor Party. The position was first created in 1919, in the first ministry formed by James Mitchell, and has existed in almost every government since. Charles Collier Perkins (8 August 1906 – 7 November 1961) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1942 until his death. He served as a minister in the government of Sir David Brand. Perkins was born in Melbourne to Gwendoline (née Collier) and Charles Henry Perkins. Educated at Geelong Grammar School, he arrived in Western Australia in 1929 and purchased a farm at Belka, which he owned for the rest of his life.
