James Macandrew
James Macandrew (1819(?) – 25 February 1887) was a New Zealand ship-owner and politician. He served as a Member of Parliament from 1853 to 1887 and as the last Superintendent of Otago Province. Early life Macandrew was born in Scotland, probably in Aberdeen, where he was baptised on 18 May 1819. He became active in the Free Church of Scotland, and from there, in the proposed colonisation of Otago (which was being advocated by the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland, later the Otago Association). In partnership with his brother-in-law William Reynolds, Macandrew bought a schooner, loaded it with cargo, and set sail for Otago with his family. He arrived in January 1851. Still working in partnership with his brother-in-law, Macandrew immediately became a major figure in the business community of Dunedin. James McGowan (politician)
James McGowan (1841 – 7 May 1912) was a New Zealand politician of the Liberal Party. Biography McGowan was born in Maxwell's Court, County Down, Ireland, in 1841. He emigrated to Auckland in 1865 on the ship ''Liverpool''. After five years, he moved to Thames, where he had a large store and a bakery. Political career He was Mayor of Thames in 1889, and in 1892–1893. He represented the Thames electorate in Parliament from an 1893 by-election. The by-election was caused after the resignation of Liberal Party MP Alfred Cadman. The Liberals selected the incumbent Mayor of Thames, James McGowan as their candidate for Cadman's seat. After a large public gathering, it was decided not to run another candidate against McGowan in light of a general election being only months away, resulting in McGowan being elected unopposed. John Ballance
John Ballance (27 March 1839 – 27 April 1893) was an Irish-born New Zealand politician who was the 14th premier of New Zealand, from January 1891 to April 1893, the founder of the Liberal Party (the country's first organised political party), and a Georgist. In 1891 he led his party to its first election victory, forming the first New Zealand government along party lines, but died in office three years later. Ballance supported votes for women. He also supported land reform, though at considerable cost to Māori. Thomas Fergus (6 April 1850 or 1851 – 29 September 1914) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. Early life Thomas Fergus was born in Ayr Scotland on 6 April 1850. There is some question as to his date of birth as the New Zealand Government records are two years different from this birth record, and his newspaper obituary gives 1851 as the birth year. His father was also Thomas Fergus. It is uncertain when his father was born as there is no birth certificate to coincide with the date of 1815, however there is record of him in both 1851 and 1861 census for Scotland, and the age in those suggest that his birth was in 1807. His mother Annie McGechin is also found in census records but no birth certificate has been found to verify her date of birth, although the census suggests her date of birth to be in 1810. George Frederick Richardson (1837 – 23 October 1909), sometimes published as George Francis Richardson, was a 19th-century Member of Parliament in Southland, New Zealand and a cabinet minister. Biography Richardson was born in Cheltenham, England, and came to New Zealand in 1851 on the ship ''Dominion''. He moved to Dunedin, where he qualified as a surveyor. In 1867 he married Augusta Marie Isabella Paterson White, daughter of Invercargill merchant Thomas John White; they had three daughters and two sons. He represented the Mataura electorate from 1884 to 1893 when he was defeated, and from 1896 to 1898 when he was adjudged bankrupt.
