Ming Kipa
Ming Kipa ( ne, मिङ किपा शेर्पा) (born 1988) is a Nepalese Sherpa woman who held the record as the youngest person to climb Mount Everest from 2003 to 2010. She reached the summit on May 22, 2003 when she was 15 years old, with her brother Mingma Gyula and her sister Lhakpa. Nepalese law does not allow climbers under 16 to climb Everest, so Ming Kipa Sherpa summitted Everest from the Chinese side. Her record was broken in 2010 when Jordan Romero reached the summit on May 22 of that year at the age of 13 years, 10 months. The previous record holder was Temba Tsheri who climbed Everest at the age of 16 in 2001. At the time of this record, 2003, about 1200 people had reached the summit of Mount Everest since 1953 with about 175 dying. Sherpa People
The Sherpa are one of the Tibetan ethnic groups native to the most mountainous regions of Nepal, Tingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Himalayas. The term ''sherpa'' or ''sherwa'' derives from the Sherpa language words ("east") and ("people"), which refer to their geographical origin of eastern Tibet. Most Sherpa people live in the eastern regions of Nepal and Tingri County, though some live farther west in the Rolwaling Valley, Bigu and in the Helambu region north of Kathmandu, Nepal. Sherpas establish gompas where they practice their religious traditions. Tengboche was the first celibate monastery in Solu-Khumbu. Mount Everest (; Tibetan: ''Chomolungma'' ; ) is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point. Its elevation (snow height) of was most recently established in 2020 by the Chinese and Nepali authorities. Lhakpa Sherpa
Lhakpa Sherpa (also Lakpa) ( ne, Lakhpa Sherpa; born 1973) is a Nepalese Sherpa mountain climber. She has climbed Mount Everest ten times, the most of any woman in the world. Her record-breaking tenth climb was on May 12, 2022, which she financed via a crowd-funding campaign. In 2000, she became the first Nepali woman to climb and descend Everest successfully. In 2016, she was listed as one of BBC's 100 Women. Early life Lhakpa Sherpa was born in a cave in the region, and had no formal education. She grew up in Balakharka, a village in the Makalu, Nepal region of the Himalayas. She is one of 11 children, and is a single mother of two daughters and a son herself. Jordan Romero
Jordan Romero (born July 12, 1996) is an American mountain climber who was 13 years old when he reached the summit of Mount Everest. Romero was accompanied by his father, Paul Romero, his step-mother, Karen Lundgren, and three Sherpas, Ang Pasang Sherpa, Lama Dawa Sherpa, and Lama Karma Sherpa. The previous record for youngest to climb Everest was held by Ming Kipa of Nepal who was 15 years old when she reached the summit on May 22, 2003. Upon successfully hiking the Vinson Massif in December 2011 at the age of 15 years, 5 months, 12 days, Romero became the youngest climber in the world to complete the Seven Summits (the highest mountains on each of the continents), a title previously held by George Atkinson. Temba Tsheri
Temba Tsheri Sherpa ( ne, तेम्बा छिरी, born May 9, 1985) is a Sherpa from Rolwaling Valley, Dolkha, Nepal. On May 23, 2001, at the age of 16 years, he became the youngest person to climb Mount Everest. The youth, who was still in school, lost five fingers to frostbite while attempting to climb from the south side in 2000. He made his successful ascent from the north side (Tibet) of Mount Everest in 2001. Temba was climbing with the International Everest Expedition. Dicky Dolma
Dicky Dolma (born 5 April 1974) is an Indian mountaineer, known for being the youngest woman to summit Mount Everest up to that time at the age of 19 on 10 May 1993. This occurred on the Indo-Nepal Everest Expedition. This Indo-Nepal Women's Everest Expedition was led by Bachendri Pal who was the first Indian woman to summit Mount Everest in 1984. Dicky was also a skier and attended numerous sporting competitions including the 1989 All-India Open Auli Ski Festival and the Asian Winter Games in 1999. She took ski training courses and basic mountaineering courses by the Manali Institute. In the same expedition as Dicky Dolma, Santosh Yadav summited Mount Everest for the second time, the first woman to summit twice. Melissa Arnot
Melissa Arnot Reid (born December 18, 1983) is an American mountaineer. She has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest six times. Life and career Arnot was raised just outside Glacier National Park in Whitefish, Montana. After college, she began living out of her car to save money and climb mountains. She first climbed Mount Rainier in 2001 and called it a "watershed moment". Arnot began teaching wilderness medicine in 2002 and began guiding on Mount Rainier with Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. in 2004. By 2006 she was a lead guide. Since 2001, she has summited Rainier more than 90 times. She is a certified Wilderness EMT and teaches Wilderness EMT courses for Remote Medical International. Shriya Shah-Klorfine
Shriya Shah-Klorfine (January 11, 1979 – May 19, 2012) was a Nepal-born Canadian woman who died while descending from the summit of Mount Everest in 2012. Early life Shah-Klorfine was born in Kathmandu, Nepal, according to ''CityNews''. At the age of nine, Shah-Klorfine had taken a helicopter tour of Mount Everest with her father. She attended Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. She grew up in Mumbai, India, which she left to work on cruise ships as a purser. While working on a cruise ship, she met her future husband Bruce Klorfine, who was a jazz and event piano player. They married and settled in his hometown of Toronto, Canada where she became a fashion buyer for the Fairweather women's clothing chain.
