Milt Kahl
Milton Erwin Kahl (March 22, 1909 – April 19, 1987) was an American animator. He was one of (and often considered the most influential of) Walt Disney's supervisory team of animators, known as Disney's Nine Old Men. Biography Kahl was born in San Francisco, California, to Erwin, a saloon bartender, and Grace Kahl. He had three younger sisters, Dorothy, Marion, and Gladys. He would often refine character sketches from Bill Peet, incorporating ideas of Ken Anderson. The final look of many characters in the Disney films was designed by Kahl, in his angular style inspired by Ronald Searle and Picasso. He is revered by contemporary masters of the form such as Andreas Deja, and also Brad Bird, who was his protégé at Disney in the early 1970s. In the behind-the-scenes feature "Fine Food and Film" shown on the ''Ratatouille'' DVD, Bird referred to Kahl as "tough," but in a gentle way, as he often gave Bird advice on where he could improve in animation whenever he came up short. ''The Animator's Survival Kit: A Manual of Methods, Principles, and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion, and Internet Animators'' () is an instructional book by Academy Award-winning animator and director Richard Williams. The book includes techniques, advice, tips, tricks, and general information on the history of animation. DVDs Animation examples from the book combined with footage from Richard Williams' masterclasses have been put into a 16-volume DVD box set titled ''The Animator's Survival Kit – Animated''. The logo from the book cover was completely animated in the traditional style, taking Williams and his animators 9 months to complete. Williams also included some early drafts of his own work from previous projects. Reception The book met with universal acclaim. ''Ferdinand the Bull'' is a 1938 American stand-alone animated short produced by Walt Disney Productions and released on November 25, 1938 by RKO Radio Pictures. It was directed by Dick Rickard and based on the 1936 book ''The Story of Ferdinand'' by Munro Leaf. The music was by Albert Hay Malotte, most known for his setting of The Lord's Prayer, commonly sung at weddings. It was remade in 2017 by Blue Sky Studios with John Cena as the titular bull. Plot The scene starts with many bulls, romping together and butting their heads, however, Ferdinand is different; all he wants to do all day is go under a shady cork tree and smell the flowers. It is a sequel to the 1935 short ''The Tortoise and the Hare'', and premiered on August 22, 1936. This time the plot revolves around a boxing match. Plot The cartoon revolves around three different storylines that all take place on a frozen lake during wintertime. In the first, Mickey helps Minnie learn how to skate. The second storyline has Goofy attempting to catch fish by dropping tobacco into the water and making the fish come up to spit. ''Servants' Entrance'' is a 1934 American Pre-Code musical comedy film. It was written by Samson Raphaelson from the Sigrid Boo novel and directed by Frank Lloyd, with a cartoon sequence by Walt Disney (Who's company now ironically owns this film due to their 2019 Acquisition of Fox) in which an understandably startled Janet Gaynor sings a song while obstreperous animated singing silverware prance around on her bed, an early example of combining live action with animation. Critics found this musical interlude especially charming. This film was adapted from Sigrid Boo's 1930 Norwegian novel ''Vi som går kjøkkenveien'' (''"We Who Enter Through the Kitchen"'') which has an almost identical plot to Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd's popular 1917 novel ''How Could You, Jean?'', which had already been adapted into a film of the same name in 1918, directed by William Desmond Taylor and starring Mary Pickford.
