Millside Radio provides hospital radio programmes 24 hours a day for people in King's Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, England, on the Mansfield and Ashfield border. It started in 1989 as a part-time service using studios at Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, before moving into former offices at King's Mill, where it was officially opened by Jeremy Beadle. It broadcasts 24 hours a day in high-quality stereo using the hospital's WiFi network across the hospital and via a distribution system free to patients for radio, but which charges for other communications, such as individual bedside wired telephone and television. It is also streamed free online via website, smartphone and smartspeaker. Staffed entirely by volunteers, it is registered as a charity using the name Millside Hospital Radio. King's Mill Hospital
King's Mill Hospital is an acute general district hospital serving the population of north Nottinghamshire and parts of Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. It is managed by the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The majority of the hospital buildings are inside Ashfield District Council (town planning) area with some peripheral buildings falling under Mansfield District Council planning controls. History King's Mill was opened as the 30th General Hospital of California, a military hospital, in 1942. The hospital housed 400 injured American personnel as well as German prisoners of war. Part of the site was used to accommodate Mansfield Secondary Technical School, taking students from 1945 housed in the Nissen huts that had been left by the US Army. It was officially opened by Sir Hubert Houldsworth, Chairman of the East Midlands Division of the National Coal Board on 22 June 1948. Queen's Medical Centre
The Queen's Medical Centre (popularly known as QMC, Queen's Med or Queen's) is a teaching hospital situated in Nottingham, England. Until February 2012, when it was surpassed by the Royal London Hospital, it was the largest hospital in the United Kingdom, though its remains the largest major trauma centre in England. It is managed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. History In 1964 Health Minister Anthony Barber announced in Parliament that Nottingham had been selected for a new teaching hospital and medical school, with 1,200 beds and an annual intake of 100 students. It was designed by the Building Design Partnership. Legal delays with the purchase of the 43-acre site meant that building work did not commence until May 1971. Jeremy James Anthony Gibson-Beadle MBE (12 April 1948 – 30 January 2008) was an English television presenter, radio presenter, writer and producer. During the 1980s he was a regular face on British television, and in two years appeared in 50 weeks of the year. Early life Beadle was born in Hackney, east London, on 12 April 1948. His father, a Fleet Street sports reporter, abandoned Jeremy's mother, Marji (9 July 1921 – 9 July 2002), when he learned that she was pregnant.
