Mill, Netherlands
Mill is a village in the former Dutch municipality of Mill en Sint Hubert, in the province of North Brabant. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Land van Cuijk. Mill is known from the Battle of Mill, a two-day fight during the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. Population On 1 January 2006, Mill had 6,049 inhabitants and was the capital village of the municipality. The municipality house is located in Mill. History In Roman times there was a population center west of the current village center. In the 11th and 12th century people settled near some brooks on the western high ride of the Land van Cuijk. The Lords of Cuijk had quite some possessions in the area. They were closely involved in the foundation of Mariënweerd abbey. During the 14th century, Mill became a village with its own (municipal council and lower court). Beesd
Beesd is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 16 km west of Tiel. It is situated near the river Linge and has a railway station on the railway from Dordrecht to Geldermalsen. History Beesd was first mentioned in 1224 as "in Beseth". The etymology is unclear. Beesd was founded in the Early Middle Ages on a stream ridge. It developed into a stretched out ''esdorp''. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with detached tower. The lower part of tower dates from around 1500. The current church is the result of an extensive modification and rebuilding in 1825. Beesd was home to 1,282 people in 1840. Beesd was an independent municipality. In 1883, Beesd railway station opened on the Dordrecht to Elst railway line. The building was demolished in 1985, but it is still an active station. Reinout Oerlemans (; born 10 June 1971) is a Dutch soap opera actor, film director, television presenter and television producer. He is the founder of the TV production company Eyeworks. Father Chrysanthus
Father Chrysanthus O.F.M. Cap. (1 September 1905 – 4 May 1972), born Wilhelmus Egbertus Antonius Janssen, was a Dutch priest and biology teacher. He was known for his studies in arachnology. Initially he was concerned with the spiders of the Netherlands but he became a specialist on New Guinea spiders. Two spider species were named in his honor following his death. Early life and education Wilhelmus Egbertus Antonius Janssen was born in Mill, North Brabant, on 1 September 1905. He studied at a minor seminary from 1918 to 1924, and joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin on 7 September 1924. After studying philosophy and theology at the major seminary, he became ordained on 12 March 1932. He lived at the Capuchin Order monastery in Oosterhout. Tongelaar Castle
Tongelaar Castle (also ''Tongelaer'') is located between Mill, North_Brabant, Mill and Gassel in North-Brabant, Netherlands. Tongelaar today The castle The current castle is a part of, and is built on top of, the Bailey (castle), bailey of a previous castle. The main structure or keep stood just west of it. A restored well marks this location. The big tower was part of this previous castle. The old keep was demolished before 1752. The big tower was the gatehouse of the bailey of the old castle. It is dated to the late 14th century, that is the same as the oldest construction found on the grounds of the main castle. The current castle is square, and had a gate in its southern wall. The west wing probably dates from the 18th century. Its foundations use the same brick as the former gatehouse, but this could be reuse. Aldendriel Castle is late medieval castle in Mill, North-Brabant, Netherlands Castle Characteristics Aldendriel Castle is a late medieval castle with a large outer bailey. It is dated to 1477. There are no indications that it ever had walls that were able to withstand a siege. However, the castle does have a wide double moat. This suggests a defendable character, even if it could not be defended against siege equipment. The main building on the current keep consists of two parts. The highest, northern and western parts, are sixteenth century, and contain parts built with timber framing. During the seventeenth century the castle became a square building of about the current size. By that time, any defensive aspects of the site were obsolete. Zeeland, North Brabant
Zeeland is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the former municipality of Landerd, about 5 km northeast of Uden. History The village was first mentioned in 1376 as Zeelant, and refers to Terra Salica, an inheritance system which excluded women. Zeeland developed in the Middle Ages on the edge of the Peel region. The Catholic St Jacobus de Meerdere Church was built between 1871 and 1872 as a replacement for its medieval predecessor. Peel-Raam Line
230px, Peel-Raam Line The Peel-Raam Line (Dutch: Peel-Raamstelling) was a Dutch defence line built in 1939 and attacked and conquered on 10 May 1940 by the German forces. The defence line was behind the Maas Line (about 9 km to 21 km awau) and started at Grave, where a barrack complex was built as part of the Peel-Raam line. From there, the line passed by Mill, Peel along the Zuid-Willemsvaart until the Belgium border nearby Weert. In the north, the defence line was connected to the Grebbe Line. The line could profit from the natural protection of the swamps, rivers and canals in the area. In the north, an artificial barrier was made, the Defensiekanaal, which was a canal. The line was made of casemates (200 m apart) and barbwire obstructions. Sint Hubert
Sint Hubert is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant, in the former municipality of Mill en Sint Hubert. Since 2022 it has been part of the municipality of Land van Cuijk. History Sint Hubert developed in the Late Middle Ages around a church. It became an independent parish in 1796. The Catholic Hubertus en Barbara church dates from 1459. The choir was renewed in 1934 and a transept was added. The grist mill Heimolen was built in 1878. It was heavily damaged in 1944, but was restored and returned to operation. The wind mill became owned by the municipality after the miller died in 1978. The wind mill remains in operation on a voluntary basis. Sint Hubbert was home to 165 people in 1840. Wanroij is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the former municipality of Sint Anthonis, about 9 km west of the town of Boxmeer. Wanroij was a separate municipality until 1994, when it became part of Sint Anthonis. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Land van Cuijk.
