"Miles Away" is a power ballad by American rock band Winger, from their album '' In the Heart of the Young''. Released in late 1990 to pop radio after already reaching number one in most AOR markets, the song peaked at #12 on the Hot 100. It is also significant for being Winger's only ever hit single in the United Kingdom, reaching #56 on January 24, 1991. The single featured a B-side, "All I Ever Wanted", that was never released on any other Winger albums or compilations, though it did appear, in demo form, on the ''Demo Anthology''. Background Originally written by Paul Taylor during the very early '80s, he offered this song to Eric Martin (later of Mr. Big) who declined even though he knew it would be a hit. Paul Taylor stated he wrote “Miles Away” for his girlfriend Emi Canyn who was one of the Nasty Habits, the background singers for Mötley Crüe. Winger (band)
Winger is an American heavy metal band that has combined elements of glam metal and progressive metal. Formed in New York City, Winger gained popularity during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band's two platinum albums, '' Winger'', and ''In the Heart of the Young'', along with charting singles "Seventeen", "Headed for a Heartbreak" and " Miles Away", put them on the top of the charts by the early 1990s. In 1990, the band was nominated for an American Music Award for "Best New Heavy Metal Band". As the music scene changed in the early to mid-1990s due to the popularity of grunge, their success faded following their third release, ''Pull''. Winger disbanded in 1994. In 2001 they reunited and have since conducted several successful tours. In 2006, the band's 1993 touring line-up (minus Paul Taylor but including John Roth) reunited to record the band's first studio album in over 13 years, '' IV'', and toured in support of the album into 2008.
